FLAC and OTG
« on: May 29, 2008, 10:28:45 AM »
Hi guys,

I am new to all this, so please excuse my ignorance. I tried to search the site for the information I was looking for, but didn't seem to find a clear answer, so here the question:

Are there presently any Rockbox treated devices with USB-Host/OTG support which are capable of playing FLAC-files stored on an external USB-Harddrive connected to the USB port of the device?

I would like to drag along my entire FLAC music collection of presently around 300GB on a small (selfpowered) USB harddrive and play it anywhere with such a player. Until now, I have not found anything which can do this in a somewhat user-friendly manner (except for my sub-notebook). I can actually do it from my Nokia N800 when in OTG-mode, but the player software available on that platform is terrible to use.

If you happen to know of a boombox supporting FLAC via USB, I would be very interested too.

Best regards,

>V<

Rockbox currently doesn't have support for USB-Host/OTG.  You could get an Archos and upgrade the hard drive to... 250GB?  Can't remember the maximum, check the wiki page for HardDriveReplacement.

Right.

Answer changed to:  Maybe there's a device with USB OTG and an original firmware which supports FLAC, but it's unrelated to Rockbox.  Try anythingbutipod.com.  Or, if you know how to code, try and write a driver for RB.  A bunch of supported units have the hardware for it.

Thank you guys, I feared my quest would be futile.

I guess the best bet would be to stick to my N800 and hope Canola will add support for playing from external media.
