linux or windows software for changing Album Gain
« on: May 28, 2008, 09:04:30 AM »
Hi,
(not sure where to post this, sorry if it's the wrong spot)
Just wondering if there's any programs (either windows or linux) that let you manually change the Album Gain tag in ogg files?

Some interweb searching has me believing this tag is normally used for software that will scan your music collection, then adjust the Album Gain value so that the volume matches the average for your collection. What I am hoping for is a way to manually bump up the gain on a few albums which are much quieter on the rest. Well, I mean manually change the tag so that the volume is automatically increased- I realise I could just turn up the volume each time it is played!!

Thanks,
Simon

On windows you can do that with Foobar2000 (should also run under Linux with wine).

Thanks, Foobar2000 was just what the doctor ordered! Perfect!

Linux users can use mp3gain and vorbisgain:

Ubuntu/Debian: sudo apt-get install mp3gain vorbisgain
Gentoo: emerge --quiet mp3gain vorbisgain

You can also use AACGain for mp4/m4a/QuickTime files, in addition to mp3 support. It's masked in the Gentoo repositries, and requires manual installation on the others.

Of course, that’s just my opinion. I could be wrong.

I believe "normalize" on Linux would also do the trick.
