Self-made player

Hi all!
I've heard about Rockbox of my friend using iPod with it, and got idea to make my own player with high quality DAC and op amp, with 1.8" hard drive... and, of course, with Rockbox.
Please, say: is it possible to make sound better than in iPod? And, if yes, is it possible to make such a player for amateur (some experience in microcontroller-based devices)? If yes, please give me some advice, for circuit technique, for which good IC to use. I'm not interested in exterier, just quality.
I know I can buy iPod and have fun, I've heard about iMod, but I just want to try... may be for self esteem, may be because I like good sound.
Thanks.

Well, I think making your own player would be too much of a hassle, finding the right hardware, and of course actually modifying rockbox to run on it. Why dont you look into some of the other players Rockbox supports and consider buying one of them?
Chronon:
Yes, it's possible, but it will take a lot of work on your part. You might want to take a look at the Rockbox Player topic in the New Ports forum.

Thanks, that's just what I looked for!
