ipod 1st gen install/removal problem

Hey, guys!

I was trying to install rockbox for my ipod 1st gen! I downloaded rocbox utility and followed the instructions for automated installation! The problem is that I could install rockbox, but not the bootloader (it shows that computer (windows OS) can't find ipod)! Anyway, now when starting it shows error - "can't load rockbox". I used rocbox utility to uninstall rocbox (for bootloader it still shows "can't find"), but it still shows error when starting.

Question: how can I totally remove rocbox from ipod so it would boot default ipod OS in this situation?

Thanx :)

Then you have installed the bootloader and the build is missing. If Rockbox Utility didn't recognize the Ipod, how did you install it then?

well, that error is shown by the bootloader. Either install a build or remove the bootloader.

You could try ipodpatcher, but as Rockbox Utility internally uses ipodpatcher this shouldn't make much of a difference. But it might be worth a try.

edgars64a:
1) ipodpatcher couldn't find any ipod devices (ipod is in yhe disc mode)
2) rockbox utility (I showed the location of my ipod in the configuration menu):
                  a) install rockbox - successfully (that is what the utility said)
                  b) install bootloader - unsuccessfully (can't find ipod devices)

Will "right click -> format device" be any help in this situation?

No. The Ipod has two partitions: the data partition you can see in Explorer, and a second one (well, precisely it's the first partition and the data partition is last) containing the OS and bootloader.

I really don't understand how you managed to install the bootloader if your Ipod wasn't recognized. Am I understanding you correctly that you get an error message "can't load rockbox.ipod" upon boot?

That is the point -  using rockbox utility I could not install bootloader, but could install rockbox. I find it really weird myself!

Yes!

p.s. thanks for helping! :)
