Voice on the gigabeat
« on: May 23, 2008, 06:31:10 PM »
Hi all,

As of yet I haven't found a podcast or similar on how accessible the gigabeat is running rockbox . How is the user interface on the gigabeat for blind users?

Thanks!

The rockbox voice interface works the same on all targets.
It has the capability to speak menus and most other ui elements
with the voice file provided on the website.
The recording screen is an exception and there are probably others.

With specially generated voiceclips or "thumbnails" it can also speak names
of files and directories, if these clips are missing, file and dir names can be spelled or numbered.

See the manual for more details on the various settings.

Voicing works well on the gigabeat in my opinion, we are quite proud of our blind accessibility! - check out http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/VoiceHowto

For items such as the menus, you can have them voiced
For items such as directories and file names, you can have them numbered or spelled, or you can create talk files to speak directory and file names to you by e.g. using the Rockbox utility.  Either way, check the link I gave above and the manual, and please ask if you have any queries.

Yeah, I've heard rockbox on the Ipod video, IAudio x5l and Iriver IHP340,, sounds awesome!!!  was wondering how it works on the gigabeat. How the controls work (heard they're touch sensative?) and other stuff like that. I haven't been able to find a podcast or other form of review on a gigabeat running rockbox.

Thanks.

Rockbox runs the same on all targets (hardware allowing of course).

The gigabeat has an annoying (IMO as a sighted person) cross that isn't fully tactile (i.e. is touch sensitive), but is still distinct from the player, so you can feel where it is.  All the other buttons are 'normal'.

However, we just use the cross as up, down, left, right and select, so I don't think you would have a problem.

A description of the player is in the manual:  http://download.rockbox.org/manual/rockbox-gigabeatf/rockbox-buildch3.html#x5-220003

Specifically, if you touch the cross lightly it won't register, so you can treat it like buttons (feel lit lightly, get your finger in the right place, press harder), the only problem being that it doesn't move when you press harder, so the only feedback you have is from the voice.
