Can Cygwin files (including Rockbox source) be used in VMware/Unix-like-OS?
« on: May 22, 2008, 05:21:32 AM »
I've been using Cygwin for about a month.
I have just used another computer to download the VMware files, and Ubuntu.  My primary computer has only a dial-up connection, so I'm wondering if I can use any of the files I got through Cygwin (including the Rockbox source files) with either VMware or Ubuntu.  Also which will compile Rockbox faster (my Windows is 32 bit, but I have an AMD64 so Ubuntu is 64 bit)?

   Thank you,

Will

You can move your SVN folder, but be sure to run make veryclean before compiling anything.

Ubuntu is much faster then cygwin on the same hardware.  64 bit doesn' t matter.

   Thanks for the info.
I'm sorry -- I meant which is faster - VMware or Ubuntu (that's why I mentioned the 64 bit - does it still not matter)?

Ubuntu is only 64 bit when you install a 64 bit version of it (same as Windows).

VMware or Ubuntu
The VMware image runs a debian distro -- and ubuntu is debian-based. So, leaving aside additional effects like 64bit vs. 32bit there shouldn't be a noticable difference -- VMs are quite fast. But you should keep in mind that you always have an additional emulation layer (even if it's just the hard drive) that obviously requires some overhead the CPU needs to work with. So while the difference might be not noticable a native OS is always best.
