...and then re-did all of the id3 tags for those mp3's. I then deleted the files from my ipod, and reloaded the freshly edited files on in their place...

How did you edit the tags? iTunes tends to write tags to its database, rather than the files themselves. Maybe amarok does the same? Verify that the files actuallly on the ipod are tagged correctly.
Did you go back into the database settings menu and do 'Initialise Database' again, once the re-tagged files were on there? They will not show up if you don't.
Do you know of a program that will tag files directly?
