H10 20g - Is it dead or seriuosly wounded?
« on: May 19, 2008, 10:57:46 PM »
Hello,
First, let me say that I wouldn't have bothered keeping my Archos FM rec had it not been for RockBox. It made it come alive. Can't imagine why they don't load features like these when new. Guess if they did, we wouldn't have a place like this to come to.
With that in mind, my Archos mysteriously died while changing the battery - no clue as to what happened to it. There suddenly was no response on the screen at all.
So, I found a 20gb Iriver H10 on Craig's List. It came with an aftermarket cord and charger. The cord had no "extra" connection for an adapter as the original ones apparently have. No problems that setup, however.
I just received a cord I ordered from Ebay which was advertised as an original replacement with the spare connection for the power supply.
I plugged the cord into my H10 and then plugged the adapter into the cord and the screen instantly went blank and nothing would respond. There was an LED on the cord that was blinking red for the few seconds I left it plugged in.
According to everything I have read here and at misticriver, the adapter calls for a "center" or "tip" positive configuration, which it is, however it is a 6v/700ma adapter, not the 5v/2amp one described in all of the readings I have done.
Could this have damaged my H10, which I have had only for a week or so? If I get into the case as described elsewhere and disconnect the battery for a few seconds and then reconnect, it will power up and eventually become responsive to the controls but the screen flickers quite a bit. It will not go into "Emergency Connect" after a reset and the right button combo, though. Then, after trying this, I have to disconnect and reconnect the battery as before to get any response out of it again.
Have I just ruined a SECOND player, or are there any other possibilities?
Thanks very much, and sorry about the long post,
Dave

Part. #2:
It is now completely dead so I guess I'll be looking for yet another.

Erm... as far as I know, the red led on the cable is supposed to stay on, not blink. Probably an indication that the power supply was bad ?!

Well, I didn't know because it is the same supply I used faithfully to charge my sorely missed JBR. Why I was thinking it was 5v instead of the 6v it is is beyond me.
I bought the H10 used with no manual and looking through the online manual, there isn't anything I can find that even mentions it.
Thanks for getting back.

Actually, it occured to me that since it was the same power supply I used on my JBR (boy I miss that thing) and also to try charging my Iriver H10, it's just possible that it is responsible for toasting both of my players. I don't know how to reliably test it other than using a meter, but I have no intention of testing it on another working H10 to find out.
It don't believe it was connected when my JBR went to hard drive heaven, though, but maybe some damage had already been done.
