4G Grayscale :: Won't turn on or charge
« on: May 15, 2008, 08:22:34 PM »
Target is 4G Grayscale Ipod, build is whatever it was yesterday on May 14th.
I installed rockbox via the utility, worked fine off and on for about a day. I installed some FLAC files on it and now it won't recognize when I plug it in to the computer, seperate charger, anything. Doesn't respond to normal Ipod reset either. All I got after I turned it off (after a full charge too) was a no battery sign and then just a blank screen. Now it won't even show me the no battery, just doesn't respond at all.

Thanks, any help much appreciated.

2 things which are commonly recommended (I just searched for "ipod respond"):

- Press and hold Menu + Select for a very long time (30+ seconds).
- Charge the battery for a very long time (overnight).

Like I said, it won't respond to the reset or recognize a charger.
=/
Thanks for the input though.

EDIT::: I punched it as hard as I could from frustration..and it started working again. Small crack but I'll take a cosmetic flaw over a dead Ipod  ;)

Sounds like a loose connection somewhere that you knocked back into place. Which means that it'll reccur sooner or later. Take it apart and look for things that might need resoldering.

I have a 4G grayscale that I loaded rockbox on last evening. The install went well and it booted up fine with Rockbox. Later I did a Menu-Select reboot so Rockbox would find my pre-installed music and that is when the iPod went completely dead. I've tried everything on this topic here in the forum, and still it won't come to life. I used the wall charger overnight (11 1/2 hours) and nothing. I don't even get the charge icon to come on when I plugged it in last night. I did the 60 seconds Menu-Select and nothing. Besides beating the crap out of it (like one user did to get it started) is there anything else I can try? It was working perfectly before the install. Thank you.

I am not sure why you did this (not accusing this action of causing the problem, though) as Menu+Select is more than a clean shutdown and reboot it is a hard reset akin to pulling the power cord on your computer while it is running.  Something you should never do unless the player has frozen and is non-responsive.

Did you toggle the hold switch from the on (red) to off (white) position before pressing and holding Menu+Select?
Are you sure your fingers are perfectly still while holding Menu+Select?

I did Menu-Select because it was part of the directions:

2.4.  Running Rockbox
Remove your player from the computer’s USB port. Hard resetting the Ipod by holding Menu+Select for a couple of seconds until the player resets. Now Rockbox should load. When you see the Rockbox splash screen, Rockbox is loaded and ready for use.

I did not expect it to load on it's own, because the directions never stated it would. The directions said to follow them to the T, and that is what I did. I figured that there was a very good reason to follow the instructions in 2.4, though they were not specifically stated.

I tried the toggle, but not more than 2X in a row.

Well, I guess I'm hijacking but maybe not,

I have the same problem but I do have a theory and possible solution. I'm guessing the original firmware is gone or something and you need to leave your ipod idle.

You can read the details here:
http://forums.rockbox.org/index.php?topic=17734.0

I don't know if it's the same problem, but it might help. Just try to see if the ipod is on by listening for a hiss in the bottom corner.

Of course this is a theory, but it might help.

Hard resetting the Ipod by holding Menu+Select for a couple of seconds

This is not nearly long enough

Do the hold thing

Do menu and select for at least 30 seconds and if still not booted,
Remove fingers and repeat menu and select,

This is the only solution I know of to overcome the apple bootloader bug

Is this bug a sure thing? I was wondering if this is happening to other people.

Is what a "bug or a sure thing"?

I was asking Robin as he said:

"This is the only solution I know of to overcome the apple bootloader bug."

I was wondering if it was happening to a lot more people. Like if the bug does actually exist.

Well, my iPod restarted tonight in Rockbox after letting it sit idle for 5 days. I did a Menu-Select and got what looked like a battery symbol with yield sign over it on the bottom left side. I then plugged it in to the charger and Rockbox booted up. The iPod had about a 3/4 charge left on it. I next had it build the Database, which it completed and then I was asked to reboot. When I did, it went dead again. Is there anything else to do to get this working properly?

Edit: Nevermind with anymore help with Rockbox. After messing with it for another 45 minutes this morning, I got the iPod to boot this morning; so I uninstalled it. The iPod is working perfectly again. This software is not worth the hassles that I've had to endure, and I never did get it to work properly. I've had enough; I quit!
