Large amount of files not showing up when browsing?
« on: May 14, 2008, 06:25:11 PM »
My entire 'My Music' folder is present on my iPod and all of the files therein are actually on the player's hard disk, and are browsable from a computer interface.  However, when I browse the folder using RockBox on the device, not all of the files show up.  For instance, in a list of MP3 files organised alphabetically by name, files beginning with A - R will show up, and then nothing after R.....  It's a bit weird! I've tried restarting RockBox in case it's just having trouble displaying a list of so many files all in one go (there are 1,505 single MP3s in my music folder alone, not counting albums, which are all in separate folders).

Any suggestions?

There's a setting for the maximum number of files to show in a folder. You need to increase this. Rockbox has to set aside RAM for this, so its default is low if you want to put all your files in one folder rather than organizing them into subfolders.

Ah right... so it'll take up more RAM if I set it to show all of my files?  Will this affect battery?  Or slow down my iPod? (it's pretty sluggish with RockBox as it is...)

Would it help any if I were to split my music folder up, even into two separate folders, say A-M and N-Z?

Yes it will affect battery. Possibly by an amount so little you can't really measure it. It shouldn't be particularly much (the option exists generally for players with smaller amounts of memory, but as they say, every little bit helps). It will not slow down the iPod (this memory is simply used for storing music when you're playing, and does not affect normal performance). Splitting up your music is an alternative, yes. Just look at what the option is set to, and make sure your music is in folders with less songs than that.
