Is it possible to revert channels ?
« on: May 14, 2008, 03:34:12 AM »
Hi,

as my headphones have a defect (I have to put the left one n my right ear), I'd like to revert channels in Rockbox.
I didin't find an option to do so in the menu.

Is it possible ?

Thank by advance for your answers.

What do you mean by "revert channels"?

Rockbox has a number of options that might be applicable, including the option to adjust the stereo width and play in mono.

i think he means that you hear the left channel output on the right earphone and reverse.

I guess this too, in fact I guess he meant to say "invert" the channels

In which case the answer is yes, but only by modifying the source and compiling a custom build...

...and here is where to start looking:

You understood what I meant (I longly hesitated between "invert" and "revert" and I chose the bad one ;) ) sorry for my english, I'm french.

So I have to post a feature request if I want to be able to revert channels without compiling my own build ?
I'll do so, I think it could be useful to some people (me, for example ;D), and I don't think it would take so much time to be implemented.

Thanks all for your answers.

If you're talking about headphones, the obvious solution is to turn them around.

I assume you're asking about a setup where moving speakers (either physically, or swapping where they're plugged in) is difficult?

My headphones have a defect, (I understand why it was so cheap on ebay  ;D) I have to put the right speaker on the left ear, and the left one on the right ear, and it's quite unconfortable to wear this way.

I also can buy a 3.5 mm jack connector, and revert both channels when soldering it.

Or even buy another (slightly less cheap) pair on ebay?  ;D

Seriously, a feature request like that is very unlikely to get accepted because it is such a minority of people would ever use it and Rockbox (in some people's opinion) is already overloaded with a plethora of options.

Compiling your own build really is not that hard and it only costs the tiime taken to learn how to do it.

I think the best solution is to "patch" my headphones with a new jack connector, so it'll work fine with any device.
With the new build solution, If I'd use another pair of headphones, I'd have to use another Rockbox build, which would suck.

By the way, I believe the correct term is "swap channels". :)

Or indeed invert, as it can mean reverse or swap ;)

Inverting a channel is used when you want to shift the phase of the signal in that channel by 180 degrees.
LinusN is right, the correct term here is „swap channels”
