Crash during USB connection, reboot how?
« on: May 11, 2008, 08:16:05 PM »
I just installed rockbox on my sansa e260 I purchased off woot without any problems, initially. I go to plug the USB back into the sansa and it crashed, the screen is all crazy. It doesn't respond to anything I push, can't find any actual reset button either. Windows is able to recognize that a device is plugged in, but not what it is.

*edit* Well the battery dying turned it off for me, plugged it back in and it seems to be working fine now. May as well find out if it repeats itself right now.

Two things:

First, holding the power button for fifteen seconds (sometimes a bit longer, best to give it 20-25) should always turn it off, no matter how bad it gets.

Second, this is the installation section of the forum. The sticky post mentions that once you've managed to boot Rockbox, all future posts should go in other sections. Please, read the forum guidelines and pay attention to the stickies, as this is a heavily moderated forum.

1. I held the power button for a minute, nothing happened.
2. This is a fresh install, it booted, then it failed - I couldn't find any "Failed installation" forums so I figured I'd post here. Where should this have gone? I really see this as falling under "Specifically this means questions about the installation process and/or problems you're having with it." Either way it seems like this is a bug related to http://www.rockbox.org/tracker/task/8272 which doesn't seem to be resolved yet? Just wanted to give this as a gift to someone who doesn't know how to change their home page in firefox/ie, suppose I'll just restore it so they don't have to deal with any bugs.

1) Considering that screen is the Rhapsody logo, the failure probably happened in Sandisk's code, possibly a hardware failure.  If it is definitely bad hardware, the power button may not work.

2) Did you successfully boot Rockbox? This is for questions about HOW to install. Did you read the post I referenced you to, or just try to imagine a technicality you thought would justify it? I'll quote you the relevant part: "Once you have booted Rockbox successfully even once, you should voice your concerns in other forums." Since you said you installed it fine initially, and it wasn't until you tried to plug USB in, it sounds like the booting completed from your post's content. The whole "everything went fine initially" bit. What part of the installation process, exactly, is "accessing USB mode"? I don't see it anywhere in the install instructions, do you?

1. It's not a Rhapsody player.
2. I don't really see any real "support" forums other than the bugtracker which already has a similar issue I've ran into, which seems to have a fix, a fix I don't really know how to install.

Well, considering you're experiencing a hardware problem, perhaps the "Hardware" section? Or as per the guidelines, if you don't know, ask in General Discussion. Writing the word "install" in bold there is kinda silly. Even if you were asking about trying to install the fix, obviously that wouldn't belong here because this section, AGAIN, is explicitly for how to install ROCKBOX itself on the Sandisk players.

You can stop arguing the point. You're not in the right. I understand that you didn't realize it, which is why I simply tried to politely mention the guidelines and the stickies, but you aren't going to change the fact by trying to come to rather ridiculous conclusions. That fix wasn't even mentioned in the first post, doesn't actually have anything to do with the problem you're having, and in fact is marked as accepted because the changes relevant to fixing that problem are already included in the official build.

Seriously, again, using USB is not covered in the install chapter, and is not part of the install process.

Sorry I'm used to forums with clear naming, especially with a clear-cut "support" section for when you don't know what you need or what is wrong. I can't understand having an section dedicated to dragging and dropping files/pressing next on a utility.

I highlighted words because I only just installed rockbox and it bricked my sansa immediately after(even though it appeared to work fine), I don't see that as a complete installation especially when the only bugs I can find are the ones that you clearly state have been fixed and are unrelated.

There is no problem with my hardware, it all works completely fine. Rockbox itself is the problem, I've removed it and everything works 100%.

See, here's the interesting bit: Rockbox has no USB mode. When you plug in a USB cable on Sansas, Rockbox shuts down and reboots into the Sandisk software.

The whole forums ARE for support. They're divided into subcategories. Support questions relating to the User Interface. Support questions relating to the Hardware. Did you read the stickies? Did you consider asking where to put it if you were confused? Did you consider that General Discussion explicitly says "If you're not sure where to post it, post here" which coupled with the "After you have booted Rockbox do not post here" should've been a pretty clear sign?

Seriously, I'm more than willing to clarify forum names, but seriously, between those two sentences, what is so confusing specifically? What about them leaves room for "I booted Rockbox successfully, then had strange problems AFTER booting it" suggests you should post somewhere that says "Don't post here after successfully booting"? It really simply suggests to me you didn't read, or you chose to decide that you knew better than the guidelines did where your post belonged. I tried to err in favour of "he didn't read" when responding to you initially.

See that's the thing... I had rockbox on, I plugged in the USB - screen goes nuts while rockbox is trying to shutdown and reboot into the sandisk software. I didn't take this as a hardware problem. If anything, I took this as a new bug, but I assumed it was an installation problem because after Rockbox attempted to shut itself down the entire media player went unresponsive. Looking back on it now, it really should be a bug report but I really don't care to go through the effort of having to remove my battery just to reproduce and isolate this bug.

Again I ask, what about this explicit statement "Once you have booted Rockbox successfully even once, you should voice your concerns in other forums." is unclear? Or did you simply decide that you got to decide when to ignore it?
