can i use an mac with my iriver rock box os???

perhaps this is  a dumb question...i just got my iriver and i didnt realize the os sucked so bad...now i want to upgrade to rock box....i have a g4 mac...dose rock box work with macs....how do i get the firmware on the iriver with a mac?

 i would use a friends pc...if i was sure the new iriver os will work with my mac...

help help!!!

You don't say which iriver you own, but all irivers that Rockbox works on act as "USB mass-storage" devices, which means they appear as a normal external hard drive when attached to a computer, and you just drag and drop music files to it.

For installation, you can use the Rockbox Utility (see the installation chapter in the Rockbox manual for your device) - a Mac OS X version is available.

the osx rockbox utility didn't work for me, it kept crashing (it may have been fixed since)

you can do it manually by using an emulator however, follow these steps here:

Some information about the crash would be interesting ... did it occur on the latest released binary? Unfortunately we have no dev working on Rockbox Utility running a mac, so it's rarely tested. Which means we need your input to fix issues ...

I've been going through the above steps attempting to do a manual install,

maybe the download page is done? Rasher has a mirror of the firmware files -- there's a link in the wiki. Besides, your link to misticriver is broken.

sorry bluebrother i'd be glad to help but it was a few months ago that i was installing rockbox and my iriver has since been very poorly (hardware, not rockbox issues) It now only boots into iriver firmware so i'm not able to do any testing!

Wanted to report (mostly) success. iRiver H320. Intel MacBook OS 10.4.11.

First tried the RockBox utility (rbutilqt-v1.0.6b.dmg). Pointed it at a v1.30(eu) iRiver original firmware, it asked me to flash that, did that; let it load all the rest of the Rockbox software. Two problems: (1) wouldn't boot at all unless the charger was plugged in (2) it only booted the iRiver OS.

It wasn't clear to me whether the RockBox utility on the Mac was patching the firmware file (the h300.hex file). So I went to a WinXP machine, got another copy of the original firmware, then used fwpatcher.exe to patch it, and flashed that. After that, everything worked fine 

If the utilty does indeed patch the firmware before telling you to flash it, then maybe my difficulty was that sometimes the H320 needs to be flashed more than once before it takes.

Rockbox Utility does patches the firmware file, otherwise you could copy that file yourself and requiring it from the utility would be kinda pointless But it's a known issue that some h300s require you to flash the firmware twice or so.
