Please, don't post every question you have in the Iriver Installation section of the forums just because you're using an H140. It is for installation questions only.

That would mean a 'set features' call fails.

Please give more input about your situation: is this with a normal disk, did this suddenly happen,...?

it is standard disk that comes with my H140 (in which I bought approx it first release It happen while I transfer I the files from external harddisk on the PC (my backup from 300 CDes MP3) to re-formated (using menu in rockbox original firmware) H140.
on PC it happen all the time no matter how many folder I seleced.

If I use my friends MacBook transfer the sames files/folder it happen only If I select > 1.6GB transfers

I received the same error message this evening. I have an H140 with a 60GB drive.  I was playing music (MP3 190VBR) and the music stopped playing.  When I looked at the display it went to usb mode with the USB icon displayed.  I shut it down from the power button.  When I started it again, "Bootloader USB mode" was on the display.  I shut it down again from the power button and it started up ok.  I hit play, and after 20 seconds it went into bootloader mode again.

I came home and started it again and it went into the original firmware.  After starting up it went into bootloader mode in the Iriver firmware.
After a hard reset it booted into rockbock again and into bootloader mode again.  On shutting down  I got the  Painc ATA -71 message.

I tried reinstalling the bootloader and reinstalled rockbox, but the same thing happens.

The version of rockbox I was using was about a week old.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Renato

hmmm reading the code again it could be 'set_features' or 'set_multiple_mode'

the calls are quite late in the disk init process, so this really puzzles me. Disk failures would have triggered an earlier call than those :(

I just tried booting up this morning and it boots into rockbox.  I press play and it resumes playing.
When I attempt to get into settings it goes into USB.  About 20 seconds later the "Panic ATA -71" comes up.

It requested to debug and the following displays:

GPIO_READ D81A7888
GPIO_OUT: 00080888
GPIO_FUNC: B1ED1AC8
GPIO_ENA: B1ED0AC8
GPIO1_READ: 0798A76E0 changes back and forth to 0798B76E0
GPIO1_OUT: 010A4008
GPIO1_FUNC: 019E60EE
GPIO1_ENA: 010E400C
ADC_BUTTONS: FF
ADC_REMOTE: FF
ADC_REMOTEDETECT: E4
Batt: 3.866V 59%
remotetype: 0

Does this help?

Is it possible that this is a manifestation of the USB / disk connector board having poor connection to the main board problem?
it was the going into USB mode that made me think of it

It could be since the same thing happens in the original firmware.
How difficult is a repair like that?  I have replaced the battery and hard drive, but no experience with soldering.

afaik there is a daughterboard that hosts the usb and IDE and sometimes suffers broken solderings on the connection to the main board.

broken solderings are fairly easy to spot, touch it with a (fine) solder iron to reflow the solder

I found a couple of suggestions on misticriver to resolve this.  A couple of pictures too.

http://www.misticriver.net/forums/iriver-h1xx-series/45641-temp-fix-always-connected-hdd-check-error-pics.html

I really couldn't see any broken solder connections.  If I can't find anyone handy with a soldering iron I might give it a try myself.
