Visualizer?
« on: April 28, 2008, 02:23:05 PM »
Sorry if this is a silly question... does Rockbox have a visualizer for music?

Search the manual and wiki for "peak meter" or "peakmeter", I think that might be what you're looking for.  Switch your theme to the rockbox_default (I believe it's still included in the downloads) to see what it looks like.

It also has the oscilloscope plugin, but it doesn't have any eye candy-style swirly visualisations

On that note, has anyone considered trying to port the Goom: What a GOOM! (the only name I know it by, anyways) visualization as a plugin? (Linux users who favor RhythmBox will know what I'm talking about)

I have seen cases where you guys are against eye candy for good reasons (such as speed), but hey, there's the Plasma plugin (albeit it's not tied to the music).....

Plugins are pretty much fair game for whatever you want, as unless the user runs them they don't impact anything.  Therefore if someone wants to e.g. waste battery life for swirly patterns, if it is in a plugin fine, as it doesn't waste anything for those that don't use it.

Plugins are *nearly* always fair game. Sometimes a plugin would require changes to the core to work (larger plugin buffer, new core functionality, etc). In those cases there may be some argument over it.

Yes, true.  Hence "pretty much"  ;)

I THINK you might be able to get a "visualizer" with viewports. at least thats what i read on a wiki or in the irc channel once.

You can't at the moment.  I guess what you are referring to is that someone once threw out the idea that in the far off future you could theoretically make a plugin run within a viewport, but that would be a large amount of work (and the desirability in terms of impact on other areas has never been discussed), and bar the one time I remember seeing it mentioned in a "wouldn't that be cool" conversation, has never come up again.

Work on a visualizer is underway. There are 2 of us working on it and we will be submitting code for a visualizer plugin soon. I posted on the Rockbox subreddit a few days ago (http://www.reddit.com/r/rockbox/comments/q5yw5/visualizer_in_progress_for_rockbox/).
