5G Ipod serial port to JVC head unit

I'm trying to get my 5G Ipod Video working with my JVC car head unit.  It uses the Apple protocol to talk to the Ipod.

I have the latest source with the serial port code but it's not working right.  When I probe the output line from the JVC it is only a 200mV p-p signal when RockBox is running.  Of course it is fine with original firmware.  It seems like the port pin on the Ipod is not set as an input and the line is in contention.

Anyone have any ideas?  Once I get the serial port working I can start implementing the Apple protocol.
