Rockbox installed but music won't play
« on: April 26, 2008, 10:49:13 AM »
I have installed Rockbox on my e260 and it seems to be working fine. I can make settings changes, change fonts etc. but when I try to play a track, it doesn't play. I get the track name, the bar that counts down the time. but no sound. I have changed the volume up as far as it goes, but get nothing. I love the functionality of Rockbox and would love to use it but need help. I installed it using the auto installer and updater and have updated to latest version but nothing helps. I'm a novice so keep it simple please.

Thanks

How did you install rockbox?  And what files are you trying to play?

The files aren't encumbered with DRM, are they?

Pretty much any WMA audio book is going to be DRMed and is thus locked to your retail firmware.  You'll have to reboot if you want to (legally) listen to those files.

Unencrypted WMA files should work though.

They are DRM files. But I thought that they should still play. Rockbox won't play DRM files?

No, Rockbox does not, and will not, play DRMed files.

The General FAQ on the wiki has some more information on it.

Besides being impossible, it would also be illegal (in the US at least).

These files are downloaded legally from my library web site. They play on the original firmware. I'm not trying to do anything illlegal.

Playing them in rockbox would probably be illegal in many countries, as it would require circumvention of the DRM on the files.  Just use them or in the original firmware, or better yet don't use them.

Your library would definitely have put some form of DRM on the files in order to (try to) prevent any possible distribution of the files outside of your own personal use.  The official firmware would be able to play the file because it will be able to use the required key/whatever to access the DRM-protected file.

OK,  Thanks for your help. Since audio books downloaded from my library is pretty much all I do with my player, It looks like Rockbox is out. I really wanted it for the bookmark abilities. Oh Well.

You can check out Project Gutenberg for a collection of public domain audio books.    :)

Edit:
* Chronon should use the spell check feature!

I too suffer the same fate as 'Mescalaro'. Legally downloaded audiobook WMA files show up on Rockbox but won't play. These books are legal downloads with licensing through NYS (in my case) library system, licensed through Microsoft Windows Media player and will play on other MP3 players, including this Sansa using it's original software. Unfortunately, Sansa doesn't include any bookmark feature in their menus, so it sure would be nice to use Rockbox. Does anyone know of a work-around for this problem? And while we're at it, where exactly should one put music files when adding them to a Sansa c250? Into the root directory, or into one of the Sansa files, i.e. Music, Albums, Playlists, etc..??  Thanks for any help.
Oh yeah, to 'Chronin'  "Project Gutenberg" is okay, but only if you like the real old classics. The books released there have been out of print for a long, long time. Not that some aren't worth reading, it's just that the library system has a better, more up to date selection.

There is no legal way to work around this problem. They are DRM restricted. It's that simple. Complain to them for encrypting their audio and making it unusable on the majority of devices and softwares.
