iPod 30gb video 5G conversion to fat32 problem
lifeisloud:
I meant a windows computer, sorry!
I'll write out what I did and what has happened:
1. Mounted iPod and used disk utility to unmount the iPod volume
2. My iPod uses 512 byte sectors, so I downloaded this file and put it in a folder set up for Rockbox under directory /Applications/Rockbox
3. This is where I get stuck, I'm very new to terminal and I'm a bit confused about how to go about the next step. I typed in /Applications/Rockbox and it said it is a directory. fine. I then typed in dd if=mbr-video30gb.bin of=/dev/disk1 and it said this is not a directory
4. I tried playing around and eventually managed to get a command (not sure what) to do something and it made my iPod continually attempt to reboot until I connected it to iTunes and restored it.
Can anyone explain to me how/what you type in for step c) d) and e) on http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/IpodConversionToFAT32#Manual_conversion
Many thanks

I believe you've mostly got the steps right. The problem is where you just typed /Applications/Rockbox. You'll need to use the "cd" command, and you'll need to know the full path to where you put the file (I'm guessing that path is /Applications/Rockbox). So you would type "cd /Applications/Rockbox" without the quotes, and then continue. Also, remember to be careful and double check that your iPod is still Disk1 before trying this.

Thanks for the help, I'll try this when I get home and see if it works! :)
Ok so I typed in what you said, and I guess it must have worked.... here's what terminal said:
1+0 records in
1+0 records out
512 bytes transferred in 2.086523 secs (245 bytes/sec)
I guess this mean it worked? I'm now not sure what to do, it says in the instructions to eject the iPod, do I do this through disk utility or just pull it out? I tried to eject using disk utility and it made my iPod crash again
update:
I think I managed to successfully format my iPod properly! However, when I used the Rockbox Utility, I select where my iPod is and the type and click on "Complete Installation" under the "Quick Start" bar and it says the installation is complete. When I quit Rockbox Utility, it then says:
Rockbox boot loader
Version: 2.0
IPOD version: 0xFFFFFFFF
Toshiba MK3008GAL
Partition 1: 0x0B 28537MB
Loading Rockbox...
Error!
Can't load rockbox.ipod:
File not found
Hold MENU+SELECT to
reboot then SELECT+PLAY
for disk mode
What exactly is it I'm doing wrong? I've been following the instructions in the manual as far as I can tell.... am I missing something?
update: seems to be working fine now, though I'm still not sure about how to use directories to install different files....
