4g Ipod issue from a rockbox n00b

This is not exactly an install question other than to say that I just installed rockbox a couple of days ago.  I used rockbox utility. I have a 4g ipod. I am in love with rockbox except for the fact that when I try to add or delete songs now, the ipod updates sometimes and never deletes songs ive taken off the ipod through rhythmbox.  [incidentally, I'm running ubuntu gutsy gibbon.] I even tried deleting them in my ipods directory.  they seem to stay and when i re-upload, the database shows doubles.  I think I'm figuring out that youre supposed to use playlists and not the database.  I just want to be able to add and delete music automatically through rhythmbox .  Otherwise I love what rockbox does for my old ipod.  Please help.

As for your problem, have you tried enabling Dircache and Database auto-update?

I wasn't sure where else to put it. There doesn't really seem to be a troubleshooting section that I saw and its not really a hardware problem either.  Sorry.  I have enabled both of those but it hasn't made a difference yet.  It didn't seem to change the issue.

There are a variety of troubleshooting sections. In fact, nearly all of them are. This could've gone in "User Interface" or even "General Discussion". Meanwhile the POSTING IN THIS FORUM post explicitly says that you shouldn't ask here once you've got Rockbox to boot, while the one in "General Discussion" explicitly says "If you're not sure, ask your question here." I thought between the two of those, the right choice would be somewhat clear.

You *may* need to set the database to also load to RAM. Basically, the option for it to automatically remove songs when they're deleted requires specific preconditions and I can't remember what they are. If you with to just use the filetree, you'll need to check with Rhythmbox support and find out if there's a way to have it generate a normal filetree on your iPod, rather than doing the iPod filename obfuscation.

That precondition used to be 'Directory Cache' enabled, but it should now work, albeit slowly without it.

This may be part of the problem, as deleted files may be in the Recycle bin (perhaps even when RhythmBox deletes)?

EDIT: That may not be relevant, as Linux does not have a recycle bin?

Try running the Disktidy plugin, that will empty the Recycle bin. Then do a Database Initialise and see what you get.

As a last resort, go into the .rockbox directory and delete all *.tcd files, which are all the database files and then re-initialise.

As far as I know, whether Linux has a recycle-bin like folder depends entirely on how you deleted the files. rm won't leave them anywhere, but for example Nautilus may.
