Then how do i check the disc? My computer recognizes the device and I can open it and see the files, but the controls on the unit don't work. it just says "Bootloader USB mode." How do I proceed? Should I just dump the root files and reload the latest version of Rockbox?

I told you I was retarded.

Llorean:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chkdsk

blindhippie:
It checks out ok. i didn't check "scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors." Should I do that? There is also a defrag disc and clean up disc option? should i run those? the disc is fairly full (2.75 gigs free).

Llorean:
You should try using the chkdsk from the command line. Reports at least suggest that this is actually a more effective version of the tool.

blindhippie:
um, yeah, i don't know how to do that. i am gui guy. i also have vista. the link you posted doesn't mention chkdsc as a command line function for Vista (although I am sure it is there somewhere). i don't even see the "run" command on the start menu.

OK, at least i was able to salvage my recording. so should i try to recover bad sectors or defrag before I just try to reboot again?
