In need of Larger Display - Sansa e280
« on: April 21, 2008, 03:42:25 PM »
New to Rockbox, have recently installed on Sansa e280 and liking it so far but really hard for the old eyes to see and could use a larger display. Any help would be appreciated.  I believe I am using the default theme.

Take a look at the WPS gallery in the wiki.  There are a bunch of themes in there with larger fonts.

I came across the Themes - BigFont, BigGreen, BigRed - will install those hoping they will do the trick and assume I can toggle between a few?  Thanks..

Perfect...that will do the number.  Thanks for your assistance.  Is there a way of going through the menus other than turning the click wheel as you can do with the Sansa software prior to Rockbox install?

I don't believe so (or not without compiling your own modified version, at least).

Yikes, maybe I'm missing something.  Quite a hassle to scroll through each menu rather than just pushing bottom part of the scroll bar.

I'm not very clear on what you mean.  How do you intend to traverse a list without using the wheel?  I do not recall a method of scrolling through a list without using the wheel in the original firmware either.  I am not sure what you mean by "pushing bottom part of the scroll bar."   ???

Bonus question:  How did you install Rockbox?

Apologies for not being clear.  On the face of unit, you have the 4 button (touch pads) - top, right side, bottom, left side.  The bottom pad is where I would normally push to navigate through songs.  Perhaps I can change the functionality of these?

Bonus question - installed through website.

The only way to change the key mapping is to edit the source, as MarcGuay mentioned.  I booted into the OF to see try to better understand what you are talking about.  It seems that pressing the bottom key does scroll the list, albeit very slowly.  I'm not too sure why you find this preferable to using the scroll wheel. . .

If you would like to make this change you're free to alter the source code and compile your own build.  Be aware that Rockbox has many features, so you should take care that your new keymap allows you to properly access all of the functions that you want.

I guess I'm just more of a button pusher than to twirl the wheel around and round to get to bottom of my list...functions better for me.  Appreciate the information and all that Rockbox has to offer.  Hopefully just a matter of getting use to something new.  Thank you.

I can empathize.  I quite like the navigation offered by a directional pad (like my old Gigabeat, for instance).  But I think you would find it challenging to maintain access to all of the options that Rockbox has to offer while sacrificing two of the buttons.

I had to go back to OF to see if I forgot how it worked (it was as I remembered).  I'll have to give it some time and decide, as I've read most folks really like the Rockbox.  Appreciate your help.

If you can overcome your distaste for scroll wheels I think you'll find that Rockbox has a lot more to offer than the OF.
