Would they let you?  Would you let them?
I have a Sansa c250 and because of this project I have every feature that I wished my player had have come with -- plus things I didn't even know I wanted yet.

There's nothing in the license that prevents them from doing so. As long as they follow the terms of the GPL, there's no reason why they couldn't. There's no question of "would we let them?" because, by using the license we did, we've already given them permission.
