ROM image on a iHP-115

I decided to upgrade Rockbox on my iHP115 (fitted with a 32Gb Toshiba hard drive) It's been working for a few years on an older version of Rockbox with no problems. I want to put a 32Gb CF card in it as that gives so much better battery life.

So I used RButil to upgrade the copy of Rockbox on the hard drive. That worked fine. Played music no problems.  Then I flashed the Rombox.iriver file using the iriver_flash. This completed with no errors.

I attempted to boot from this image using the hold switch and changing the option on the bootloader menu. The songs just started flashing up on the screen and not playing. I have seen this before when I updated my other player and didn't flash rockbox. So I checked that I was booted off the latest version (3.9). I flashed the rombox.iriver again. Shutdown. Started up from the ROM image. Still the same.

So then I flashed the RAM image - rockbox.iriver loaded fine again. Then I rebooted from the RAM image and it worked with no problems. If I boot off the hard disk I can play music fine. The ROM image will still not not play anything.

I have checked all the files in the .rockbox folder against a manually downloaded zip file of the firmware and they are all identical.

Does anyone have any ideas?

If you've got a solid state disk is there really any point in flashing the onboard solid state memory?  Obviously its nice to save that RAM if you've got to spin up the hard disk, but if you've got no hard disk?

If you read http://www.rockbox.org/wiki/IriverFlashing in the section headed "Replacing the original firmware " you will see 4 reasons why you should flash Rockbox to the player's flash memory. That is why I wanted to do it.

As well there is a bug that stops the player booting correctly off the disk when you use a CF card instead of an actual hard drive. This could be cured by an updated bootloader, but there is no plan to do this any time soon. So in the meantime I am quite happy booting from the player's flash memory, if only it would work properly.

It might be helpful if instead of being overly and deliberately vague you listed your exact reasoning for wanting to do this.
The point saratoga is trying to make is that the reason this is done is to get it off the slow spining disk and into onboard flash memory, if you are installing a *fast* solid state disk, then...that point is defeated.

Because of the ATA error when trying to boot off the hard drive. Error in the bootloader.
