Apple firmware 1.3 upgrade on 5.5 gen iPod Video 80

(1/1)

desertmusic:
Hello,

I thought I'd upgraded Apple's firmware once before without problem, but when I accepted the latest 1.3 firmware from iTunes for my 5.5 gen iPod Video 80G, I couldn't get rockbox to reinstall.

ipodpatcher indicates no iPods found.

Now, I've had what I thought was an iPod Video for the last 9 months and have been running and upgrading rockbox every few months with no problem.

I read in other posts that people have had problems with the unsupported iPod Classic.  Could the 1.3 firmware upgrade from Apple make my iPod video look like a Classic to the rockbox install?

I'm more than a little nervous about running a restore in itunes as I suspect it would wipe my music folders (all in ogg format).  I've got them backed up on other systems, but would like to avoid having to transfer them all again.

Any ideas?  I can listen to music via a client on my pc for now, but of course, can't listen to anything on the run.

John.

Your 5.5 G iPod cannot be converted to a Classic via a firmware upgrade.

When you try to run ipodpatcher:

1. Is your iPod in disk mode?

2.  Are you logged in to your computer as administrator?

You might also want to try using a different USB port or a different cable.

Ahah!  That was it.  I was running ipodpatcher in my usual limited user account under XP.  I was able to run ipodpatcher successfully after switching to root/admin.

Thanks.  I am so accustomed to upgrading rockbox by dumping the zip files, even as a limited user, that I forgot I needed admin permission for the boot loader.

Cheers,
John.
