play audio track from video file
« on: April 19, 2008, 05:10:04 PM »
Hello,

I want to revive this topic: http://forums.rockbox.org/index.php?topic=1274.0

Is there still no way to get the audio part of an avi file?
I use my iPod for storage purposes, and would like to listen to some of this videos...

Nothing possible?

Thank you

Why exactly did you post this in an "Installation/Removal" section?

Use a PC tool to extract the audio from the video file.

Well that is what I am currently doing but I see no reason for that.
If the iPod does not have the power to read the video stream, I should still be able to read the audio from the container no?

Thanks

Yep, but in that case it would need to understand the audio container -- which it doesn't do. Adding support for the container (avi) only for such a limited use case isn't worth the work IMO.

And as far as I know does Rockbox detect the needed codec by the file extension. Which also won't work for audio tracks in a container.

You'll have to wait for someone to write an AVI parser (or do it yourself).  It'll probably happen eventually whenever Xvid support goes in, but I doubt that will be soon.

AND it's possible the AVI parser will remain in the plugins, meaning that you may be able to listen to them via mpegplayer (if the video codec is unsupported / too slow) but you probably won't be able to playlist them.
