e260 - 3/31 snapshot was better
« on: April 16, 2008, 11:47:52 AM »
Ogg playback on my sansa is still spotty.  I attempted to update to the 4/14 snapshot, because the "push the back button causes it to skip forward" was fixed.  Still happens here...

Luckily, I kept the old 3/31 snapshot, which works better.  At least when I hit the back button, it actually goes back one song...

I'll check back in a week.  just giving you a heads up...

1) The forums aren't the right place for bug reports.
2) The version you just reported testing was old when you made this post. Use the "Current Build" link, not an old daily from a day or two ago.

Besides, playback being "spotty" doesn't help much. You also didn't include any information about your files except them being ogg -- for example, the bitrate is an interesting fact. Also, what effects have you enabled? Crossfeed? EQ? How many bands are used of the EQ?

:-\ The ogg fix was committed monday April 14th.  I thought that the ogg fix would be on the snapshot from the 14th.  But apparently this was not the case.  I tried the snapshot from today (17th), and initially, it appears to work.  I have went back and forth with no issues.  I've started the song in the middle of the song, and hit "back" twice, and it seems to work.  I click forward, then click "back" really quick, and I did this multiple times in succession, and everything seems to

4/17/2008 will be my new milestone build.  It's the day where everything seems to work.  I'll keep that copy for when later bulids break something...  The last one was in mid-october 2007.

RE: blue brother, to answer your questions

bitrate= variable.  I rip ogg with minimal bitrate=32kb and maximum=350kb, no nominal bitrate.  Average I usually see for each song is ~ 180kb.  Gain is calculated using vorbisgain or by CDex, depending on what OS I'm using at that time.

replaygain is the only effect enabled.  no crossfeed, no eq, no bands. no themes (black bg, green fg), no icons, no backdrop (no "pretties")

here is my config.cfg:

Thanks for all the help...  Please don't think me ungrateful.  It's just I see too much love for MP3 around here, and seems like the bastard child OGG gets thrown token scraps.  I've been using ogg for almost a year now, after finding Rockbox, and I am pleased with the sound quality.   And I love using Rockbox.  I bought my wife a new e280R just so that she can put Rockbox on it...

Cheers,
Bryan Brake

The reason I did get involved into Rockbox was ogg -- I bought an h120 back those days, and after switching to ogg I figured that the ogg support of that player was quite bad. I started using Rockbox at a stage where playback was working on h120 for like 2 months or so ... I don't think ogg is getting less love than mp3. It's just a more complex format, thus making things ... more complex ;)

Please don't use "snapshots", use a current build from http://build.rockbox.org/ -- there is no real difference between those, and the current build is more up-to-date. I've verified the issue you mentioned but cannot reproduce it on my side (albeit I don't own a sansa, but that fix should've affected all players).

RE: bluebrother

Damn, I didn't finish my thought in my earlier ramblings.  The fix does work.  I've not ogg playback functionality this nice since my last milestone (october 2007). :D

I am mixing terms.  I use OpenBSD, and they call their latest builds "snapshots".  when I said "snapshots" for Rockbox, I meant "builds".  And I get my "builds" from the link you posted.  I have been using rockbox since I chucked my 4GB ipod mini because of the poor battery life. (I gave it to a friend who has rockbox on it now :) )

It was my fault for not checking the changelog for that day to ensure the fix was implemented.  My apologies.  I should have known better.

Glad someone is here to help further the open audio movement.  Many thanks bluebrother.

Cheers,
Bryan

P.S.  Please feel free to lock this.

"Build for the 14th" is made when the 14th begins. Any commits on the 14th happen after the build.  As for his problem with "snapshots", you keep using a date to identify them. An average of 7.5 builds are made available per day, but we also have an archived Daily build that is what it sounds like you're referencing by using dates, rather than the current build which is made every time the codebase is committed to.

that many builds in one day?  wow...  You are busy.

I thought current was found at http://build.rockbox.org/ .  When I come to work in the morning, I go there, download the "rockbox.zip".  I had no idea you had so many builds in one day.

Thanks for the clarification.

Cheers,

That is the current build, but it changes several times a day. It can't be identified with a date, which is why we provide the revision number beneath it.

No ... the build servers are ;) It's a quite good automated thingy.
