Charging iPod via Firewire while playing

I've seen comments previously that it is possible with some iPod models to charge them via the PC USB interface while playing music, by holding Menu when connecting.

Older iPods don't have the USB interface, but I was hoping something similar would be possible with the Firewire interface. However holding Menu doesn't seem to work with the 2G. Is there some other way of achieving the same aim?

Considering how the solution doesn't mention Rockbox, and these are the Rockbox forums where he'd be asking how to charge while playing in Rockbox.... I don't see how that solution can really be at all relevant here.
