Ipod 5.5gen: charging from a wall adapter does not work?

(1/1)

surfer:
My Ipod 5.5gen does not show any charging activity when connected to the wall adapter (output: DC 6V, 450mA). There is no indication on the battery icon similar to the one when plugged into the USB of the PC.

I tried to check it with the backlight as well setting it to "ON, when plugged in". This again only works fine with the normal USB but it does not with the wall adapter.

(The same wall adapter charges my another player (without rockbox) Archos 404 without any problem indicating the charging process on the battery icon.)

Did you ever get a response on this or figure it out? I am having the same problem.

surfer:
no, i do not know why it does not work

USB is supposed to be 5V or just below that.  Maybe the USB power manager in the iPod doesn't like higher voltages?

Edit:  I just looked at the LTC4066 datasheet (PDF) and yeah, input voltage should be between 4.35 and 5.5.  The absolute maximum continuous input voltage beyond which damage may occur is 6V.

Be careful, some people have blown USB charging capability.  You can then still charge via Firewire but the iPod may think USB power is supplied all the time, which prevents it from shutting down.

Edit2:  Also note that USB is supposed to supply up to 500 mA.
