iRiver h340 Broken DC 5v Jack
« on: April 08, 2008, 01:35:55 PM »
Unfortunately I recently bought an iRiver h340 over the net which has a busted dc input jack, so it will only charge from usb, not the wall charger.  It looks like the yellow casing surrounding the center nub is split, and the center nub has been pushed back a bit.

Here is a picture

Sorry, it's a bit blurry, but it's the best I could get, and if you look, you can see what I'm trying to explain.

I would really really like to be able to charge from the charger as it is MUCH faster and you can play and charge at the same time.

Is it possible to fix this?  Can/will I have to buy another piece from an electronics store and replace it?  Thanks in advance.

I can't help you fix the jack, but you can charge over USB while still playing. Just hold the record button while pluging in (this may start a recording if you take too long, but you can stop that...)

This is at least a step in the right direction.  I'm assuming I need to have the player on first?  Edit:  can you give me a step by step?  I've tried this a few times and I'm not sure if i'm doing it right.

If the player is off, hold Rec and insert the USB cable. This will start the original firmware, which in turn will charge, provided that the settings are correct.

or boot normally, hold rec, insert cable, release rec, press stop to leave recording mode.

(/me still votes to use hold for those things rather then rec)

Thanks for the help guys.  I've just installed rockbox for the first time, so how do I know that it's actually charging?  The battery icon doesn't seem to be moving or anything.  Also, is this still much slower than using the ac charger?

No one has any knowledge of a hardware fix for this?  I'd really appreciate it if someone did, although, my main concern is the speed, so if this is about the same, then it's perfect.

Again, thanks for all the help so far.

The best way to be absolutely sure a device is charging is to go to the battery debug screen (System -> Debug (Keep Out!) -> View Battery).  The first screen you get to is a graph.  With lithium based rechargables you should expect to see the voltage rise at a more or less constant rate and then level out around 4.2V.  That's not the end however; it's just when charging switches from constant current to constant voltage.  If you scroll up and down you'll see other info.

Regarding fixing the jack, I'm not sure what you're asking.  It's pretty obvious: you need to open up the player and resolder, repair or replace the jack.  There are photos of opened up H300 series devices in several places.  The only real question is where do you get a replacement jack.  You could try asking iRiver as a start.

Regarding charging from USB, there is an option to enable this:
Settings -> General Settings -> System ->  Battery -> Charge During USB Connection
(This option exists on two other devices I have, but I looked at the code a while ago and it seems it only does something on iRiver H300 series devices.  Its presence on other devices may be a bug.)  I found it defaults to off.

I think you need to go into the original firmware and select the USB connection to be PC (not HUB), then you can go back to rockbox.

Could be this was fixed but I'm unsure, so maybe you can try...

Thanks again, guys.  I don't think I'll be trying to solder in a new jack, even though I knew that's what a hardware fix would entail.  From what I've been hearing, it sounds like I'd have to get it from a broken player, and it doesn't really seem worth it to me anymore.

It wasn't charging before.  I had to go into the Rockbox settings and enable usb charging, but as of now, everything seems golden.  Aside from the small fact that I have to go into recorde mode first.  That mic is so sensitive, I near blew myself out with my headphones the first few times.

Now, I just gotta get the radio I want for my car with USB direct.  Thanks everybody.
