Compact Flash Mod on iAudio X5 ... problems
« on: April 07, 2008, 11:57:36 PM »
I'm not sure if this is the correct location for this thread, but I couldn't locate and info on this type of discussion ...

Anyways, I had a look at the CFModGuide TWiki and there are sdome success stories of modding irivers and toshiba DAPs to accept CF cards instead of HDD.

In the past I had success modding my X5 with a CF to 1.8" Adapter and using a 512MB card (just to test) and after that initial success, I thought I'd try the ADATA 32GB CF Card ... well, it's been a challange and I still can't get this to work.

Here's what I did:

I compiled the bootloader using RB build-level r16629M (I also patched it to dual boot using FS#5289)

I then used mkboot.exe and built a X5 firmware using OF v2.07e combined with the compiled bootloader from r16629M

X5 was flashed and I verified that all was well by booting into the OF (hold Power ON for 3+ seconds) and I also tested a compiled version of RB r16629M (flick Power ON).  This confirmed that the dual-boot bootloader was working.  I then swapped the 20GB HDD with the 32GB ADATA CF card + Adapter.

CF card was formatted FAT32 and I had copied the .rockbox folder onto it before the swap.

I flick the power switch to boot into RB and it seems to be working .... however, once the splash screen clears out I see "No .rockbox directory  Incomplete Installation" and the default menu pops up.  I navigate to the File menu and I make sure "Show Files" is set to All in the quick menu.  I don't see the .rockbox folder.  I also tried to xfer the folder using RB USB mode ... I can see the file in the windows explorer, but after I disconnect the USB cable and power on the X5, I get the same message "No .rockbox directory ..."

I feel I'm close, but I can't figure out what else to try.  I know the Adapter works (using the smaller CF card all works well) and I know the CF Card is good too (I can xfer data to/from it using a CF Card reader)

I think perhaps there is something in RB that might be causing a problem.

If there is anyone out there who's tried the CFMod on the X5 or would like to help, I'd greatly appreciate any input.

I haven't given up yet ... but I can't try any other CF cards as I only have this one 32GB one (the others I have are by Lexar and they are just way too small in capacity to be practicle)

regards,

vm3

just a thought:

Maybe the CF card was formatted in superfloppy mode, something I think rockbox doesn't handle.
Make sure there is a partition table on it and one primary partition FAT32

Superfloppy formated disks work fine since r16583.
