First custom build: can I screw up my player?
« on: April 05, 2008, 10:25:01 AM »
I'm currently building RockBox from the source, without any modifications. Later, I'll try some custom modifications.

I'd like to know if I can screw up my player by dropping a buggy RockBox build on it?

My guess I that if I'm not able to boot anymore, I can always remove the RockBox bootloader and that would reset the player back to its original bootloader, but I'd like to be sure! Is there a way I can permanently damage my player with a custom build?

I'm using a sansa e270.

Thanks!

If you put a bad build on, you can use recovery mode to fix it.  See the e200 unbrick page in the wiki.

Well no, if you can't boot, you won't be able to remove the rockbox bootloader.  First you'd have to fix the player so that it booted, then you could make whatever changes you wanted.

I though the sansapatcher could maybe connect without the player being booted..  :-\

But I'll definitely take a look at that "recovery mode"... Thanks!

How should this work? But one thing hasn't been pointed out yet in this thread: USB is still done using the OF, and that gets booted by the bootloader. Thus you *can't* screw up your player with a broken build -- you would always be able to boot into the OF (and reinstall Rockbox from there -- you'll use that for updating anyway). You *could* screw up your player if you modify the *bootloader*. In other words: if you can't boot Rockbox anymore due to a broken build you can still boot the OF and replace the broken build. In that sense you still can boot the player -- you just can't boot Rockbox anymore.
