Rockbox does not detect newly copied music
« on: April 02, 2008, 09:41:50 AM »
How can I force rockbox to search for new music?

It was working fine with the music that was on my player (Sansa e260) prior to installing rockbox, but when I deleted some files and replaced them with new ones, I was not able to play anything. Rockbox seems to be "looking" for the old files and completely unaware of the new ones.

Any help would be hugely appreciated.

Update the database.  The manual explains how to do this.

"Update Now" does not work consistently --- rockbox seems to still be looking for deleted files.

Also: After doing "Update Now" rockbox still detects the wrong number of files in the MUSIC folder -- this is with Auto Update turned on as well.

It can take a minute to complete the update.  If you want to start fresh you can initliaze the database.

I have tried both with no luck -- how long should it take?

There are only about 60 files, though rockbox detects over 200...

Do you have a recycling bin that hasn't been emptied?  And when you say it detects over 200, do you mean the database is detecting them or the file count plugin?

Recycle bin is empty on the PC that I am copying files from (I hope that is what you meant)...

The file count that I am referring to is the one displayed under the progress bar in the "Now Playing" screen.

Once again, neither "Update Now" nor "Initialize Now" seem to have any effect whatsoever. Still an incorrect file count, still trying to play deleted files and still not detecting new files.

So you created a playlist of all the files on your player?  How did you do it?  Are you creating a new playlist or loading an old one?  The files must still be on the drive somewhere if they're being added to a new one.

Actually, he meant the recycling bin on the player.  Try running the Disktidy plugin.  I believe that will empty any deleted files from the recycling bin on the player itself.

I ran Disktidy and it reports: "Cleaned up 0 items"...

I am not using any playlist at all -- I am simply copying directories full of mp3 files to the MUSIC directory on the root of my player.

Whenever you play music with Rockbox you're creating a playlist.  How are you starting the playback of your music?

I used "Create Playlist" and this seems to have fixed everything...!

Thanks for all your help.

What were you doing before?  I'm curious now.

Previously, I was simply pressing the "Play" button...

I did not realize that...

"Create Playlist" seems to be doing what I thought updating the database would do.
