Database Error
« on: April 01, 2008, 06:42:06 PM »
I get
Code: [Select]
Database Error
Please try again. If you come back to this error screen, report the error to an administrator.
whenever I try to do a search.
I suppose the database needs a repair?

Probably just an error with SMF (who runs the forums). It usually clears up soon.

Yeah, I thought so; I just wanted to mention it.

SMF does not "run the forums." SMF is a software. It also doesn't usually clear up on its own. It's important that we know about this, so we can ask one of the few people who has the ability to log into the machines to give a few commands to SQL that resolve the problem. Sometimes this happens quickly, sometimes it can take a while (depending on the availability of the few people who have the right access).

The next time there is a database error could someone try to record at what time they noticed it? I'll go through the server logs to see what is happening at that time. You can also email me (found in my profile) with the info.

Not sure if it will fix the problem, but I think we need to update the SMF software here. Does someone from rockbox want to update to the latest 1.1.4 or do you want me to?

The problem lies in the MySQL version, it's a known issue with the version the server is running. As for updating the SMF software, it breaks some of the extensions we're using, so I've been looking for a solution to that before committing to an upgrade.

Is the issue resolved with mysql5? If so I'll see if we can get a server upgrade for it.

Until then there are some useful tweaks that can help here:

My research at least suggested that it appeared to be fixed in the changelog for the very next revision of MySQL. It should also be in 5, I believe. ("next revision" based on last time I was able to check what you're running, which was before my ftp access was mysteriously revoked).

So next revision up and it should work? I think we're at 4.0.27 now. I guess we could just go to the top of the 4 or even 4.1. I doubt going to 5 would break anything, but you never know. Not sure what happened to your permissions. I'll make the upgrade request.

Yes, 4.0.27 sounds right (or specifically, 4.0.28 sounds like the number I found was supposed to include a fix). Hopefully this resolves things, and thanks. :) (Of course, this is still dependent on research I did some months ago being right.)

In the meantime, the forums can still be searched, though not quite as nicely, by entering your query in the Search box on the left side of the page (while browsing forums.rockbox.org, of course).

That's actually why I brought back that search box (I'd removed it, to avoid the slight confusion that it wouldn't search the main site from here, but would search the main site if you were browsing the wiki, for example).
