Ipod 5th gen not starting - Solved and instructions for fix 1418
« on: April 01, 2008, 07:12:50 AM »
So I have my ipod here not starting. It had rockbox on it. When i reset i get the apple logo and that is all. I can enter disc mode, or if I hold play it goes into rockbox (sometimes). Sometimes when entering rockbox it says that the linux.bin file could not be found. Other times it goes right in. I have tried the hp format util but get a write protected error message. Itunes will not restore the ipod and gives an error of 1418 (i believe that is the number). Can anyone help me out?

Thanks

ps i am a linux user, so if there is a method that i should try that does not involve windows, i will try it. the ipod is listed at scsi position 4 for right now and sdc is supposed to be where it exists(shouldnt this be e??). at any rate, that device does not exist.

You're only supposed to hold play if you want it to launch an iPodLinux kernel (the linux.bin message you see).

What messages do you see if you hold down ">>|" when you boot ?

It goes into rockbox.  The problem is that it is not mounting in linux like it used to and windows is just screwy with the damn things.  I am not really sure what is going on.  I have tried everything that i know of to format the drive (which shouldnt hurt as long as i have itunes to restore it, right?) and it isnt working.  The ipod knows that it is connected to something and shows the do not disconnect screen.  When in rockbox when i plug it in, it shows a usb plug, then restarts, but no mounting.  I of course cannot use the removal util either because it will not mount.  I have gotten it into its original apple firmware as well, but again it will not mount nor allow a restore from there.  In windows when forcing disk mode, it will show up in my computer, but nothing comes of that and the drive is "empty".  However when it goes into rockbox, the music is still there, it even sometime plays (most of the time it just freezes at 0 seconds into the song).

Hope this info helps diagnose the problem

Connect it in emergency mode and run chkdsk on it.

I fixed it today.  Rather than do the unintelligent thing and just say nothing, I will explain how to fix it.  You guys may want to stickie this since it was a combination of different methods that I used.

Basically all I did was use my gfs windows xp machine and keep disconnecting and reconnecting the ipod (just pulling the cable since it didnt respond to anything else) until the drive was in my computer and i could double click on it and see nothing (the directory was empty).  right clicking and hitting properties showed the drive was 0 gb in size and 0 was used.  So i right clicked on the drive in my computer, and hit format.  I chose fat32, named it IPOD, and clicked quick format.  It just sat there and did nothing, no progress bar, no nothing.  I walked out of the room to get a drink and came back and it was successfully formatted.  I then used the ipod restore tool (from apple) and then the ipod worked.  Here i sit now ready to reinstall rockbox on my once "bricked" ipod 5th gen.

Thanks for all of the help.  If people need anything clarified i will be around here for the next couple days, or just pm me and i can try to help.

Glad you fixed it. You probably could've used chkdsk to save it, though, without having to format.
