The manual contains uninstallation instructions.

I have uninstalled rockbox, but the bootloader won't go away because the rockbox utltly can't find the original firmware. Is it gone forever? I've also tried to update to the latest Toshiba firmware, but it fails to update, presumably because of the presence of the rockbox bootloader.

Do you have a file named FWIMG01.DAT.ORIG anywhere on your player?  You might also look at the folder where Rockbox Utility lives.  If you can find such a file, this is most likely the original firmware file that was replaced when you installed the Rockbox bootloader.
