Sansa 280R v1: seems to install successfully, but doesn't really
« on: March 31, 2008, 11:04:53 AM »
Hi folks,

I've got a Sansa 280R v1.0.2.31 that I purchased from Best Buy in the US about a month or so ago.

Following the instructions at http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/SansaE200RInstallation:

- I have successfully completed the bootloader patching using e200rpatcher with a result of "Firmware Unlocked"
- I then carefully followed step two (numerous times, in fact), placing .rockbox plus pp5022.mi4 in the root, and OF.mi4 in the system directory.
-After "Safely removing" my Sansa, I disconnected the USB cable.

The result was that  it rebooted,  refreshed the  database, displayed "upgrading firmware", and then "upgrade successful".   It rebooted itself at which point the instructions say that it *should* have booted to Rockbox, but it did not!  It booted to Sansa Rhapsody again.

I am using Windows XP with Admin privileges.

I've read through various forum posts, google searches, and rockbox manual text and haven't found a solution for my issue.  Can anyone toss me a clue?  :)

Thanks!

After another reboot, you should be in Rockbox!

Did you try that?  Kind of obvious but sometimes it's that simple...

Do you see the Rockbox bootloader doing anything (small white text on a black background) when you boot up, or does it look the same as it did before?  Did you make sure that you indeed have a real Rhapsody model (info on how to tell is at the top of the page you linked to)?

Good questions.

I do not see any indication of the Rockbox bootloader doing anything.  It simply boots up to Sansa Rhapsody as it's always done.

The back of my sandisk says model 280R, and I have the Rhapsody/Plays for Sure selections in the mode settings.  So I'm pretty sure I have the Rhapsody version.

I should also mention that I have tried the process with more than one USB port on my laptop (I have three ports, two on the left and one on the right of my computer, so that makes me think perhaps I have tried two different USB controllers).

Also, when I reconnect my Sansa after the supposed successful update, I notice that the pp5022.mi4 file is gone from the root drive.  So I have to replace it each time I re-attempt the update.  The OF.mi4 and .rockbox files are always still there.

I think what happens is that the pp5022.mi4 file you put in the root is written over the OF.mi4 you put in the System folder with the Rockbox bootloader, hence it's disappearance.  Perhaps there was a misunderstanding regarding the renaming of the first file?  Someone who's been through this process before could definitely be of more assistance...

Did you put the wrong file as OF.mi4 and the wrong file as pp5022.mi4? Try giving them a switch in location and renaming them.

Holy, crap!  You hit the nail right on the head.

I have no idea how you figured that out from the information I gave you, but I am now the happy owner of a rocked-out Sansa.  :)

Thanks so much,

Allie

Hello breezescreamer and welcome aboard.

As a friendly request I will ask you, if you could try poststing your message after the quote box.
Top posting is not really welcomed in the Rockbox community (especially in the mailing lists), as it can be sometimes confusing. So even in the forums it would be a good habit to try and avoid it.

Thanks in advance.

Walk us through how you installed rockbox.

Also, are you sure it's an R series?

Zajacattack, v1.0.2.31 is an e200R firmware since my e280R had it on it when I bought mine.

yes, it is say on the back e280R and has two modes  "Rhapsody" and "Plays for Sure".

I ran step one from  "How To Install Rockbox on the Sansa e200R/Rhapsody".
Sansa gave me message "Firmware Unlocked"

So now i'm in step 2 .Unziped rockbox in "root".,OF.mi4 in system folder and pp5022.mi4 in root directory and having  exact same situation >>>>"Also, when I reconnect my Sansa after the supposed successful update, I notice that the pp5022.mi4 file is gone from the root drive.  So I have to replace it each time I re-attempt the update.  The OF.mi4 and .rockbox files are always still there"
Tried to switch and rename files back and force still wouldn't work.

Thanks

Are you downloading the rockbox bootloader and putting it on the device as pp5022.mi4?
You should be downloading this file:
http://download.rockbox.org/bootloader/sandisk-sansa/e200R/pp5022.mi4
