Free the iPod Petition

As you know right now the newer iPod's are encrypted. To try to fix this please sign the following petition . It will only take 15 secs at the most and this could save the iPod modding community.

*sigh*

You should know these things have absolutely no effect whatsoever.

Also, you state "it will do no harm to Apple", but, despite the iPod's resilience, it probably will cause extra support hassles for Apple due to people installing Rockbox/iPodLinux, breaking something, then installing the Apple firmware and taking it back, acting like they didn't do anything.

Your petition states, "Now Apple has decided to prevent us from developing software for it anymore. The reason for this is that Apple does not want people stealing their software and users were using this freedom to steal their games."  What did you get this information?

Apple made the product and made millions off of it. They don't really have to hanker to customers demands.

http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/FreeiP0d/ is an existing, and (IMHO) better petition.

I will sign both petitions out of politeness, I don't have anything better to do anyways. I'm sure it will have absolutely no effect on Apple because of the sheer number of devices they sell. Lost business for them I suppose, when my Nano decides to fail I will search for another Rockbox-compatable mp3 player and it may not be an Apple product.

Basically the worst damage you could do is not buy their products.

Exactly. Apple doesn't have to do anything to improve their products UNLESS (1) they feel threatened that it will decrease sales or (2) it actually decreases sales!

Why would Apple give a shit about its customers?  They have such a legion of geeky diehards who will buy anything they release, regardless of how good it is, they don't really need to cater to, well, anyone who's not an Apple geek.  It's kind of like Radiohead, but with electronics.

What kills me is that no manufacturer has seen Rockbox and discovered that there's a small, but potentially lucrative niche market for higher-end mp3 players with high-capacity drives, OGG/FLAC support, better internal components to power bigger headphones, etc.
