Are button presses sometimes ignored on video iPods?
« on: March 30, 2008, 01:31:39 PM »
I'm running r16819 on a 30 gig video iPod.  Sometimes brief button presses are ignored.  This is quite rare and it definitely only happens with brief presses.  It has happened with all clickwheel buttons.  I don't recall it happening with the centre button but this is not a definite no.  It has happened while playing and while stopped.

Another button issue is that sometimes pressing a clickwheel button activates scrolling.  Maybe I need more practice, but it seems to me that the clickwheel is too sensitive.  I wonder if maybe a brief button press during or after clickwheel events is more prone to being ignored.

I'm not submitting a bug report yet because this is an old iPod which I recently repaired.   For all I know maybe iPod buttons wear out like this, or some hardware defect is making the clickwheel overly sensitive.

You could build your own custom build with slightly modified code to reduce the scrollwheel sensitivity.
Also, it just takes a little to get used to. Plus, the button/scrollwheel mixture on the iPod causes a click to often also be registered as a scroll. Not really a way around this.

Is this your problem?

The ignored button presses are the main problem.  I mentioned button presses activating scrolling in case that was a reason why button presses are sometimes ignored.

I've never noticed ignored presses, assuming I press firmly.  I have noticed lagging response to presses, though.

I turn the beep volume to low ("Controls the volume of the beep that is heard when skipping forward or backward between tracks. The beep is disabled when set to OFF.") so that I have an audible indication of skipping forward and backwards when in the WPS (the time I am least likely to be looking at the screen.)

With the original firmware, version 1.3 (latest), it seems that when I first touch the scrollwheel I need to move a bit before scrolling starts.  That initial move is farther than the move needed to scroll from one item to the next.  That's probably what prevents button presses from activating scrolling.

It also seems like I have less of a problem with ignored button presses with the original firmware, but it's hard to be certain because it's rather rare either way and there are different patterns of button use depending on the firmware.

So, by "less of a problem" it sounds like you mean it's still happening in the OF. Which kinda suggests it's a quirk of the hardware, and not necessarily something we can do anything about.
