Is this propably a sansa e280 v1?
« on: March 29, 2008, 08:03:35 AM »
Hi,
I hope I chose the right topic for my thread. If not please do not beat me up :D
At the moment I am "flirting" with a Sansa e280. The thing that keeps me a bit away from it is, that Rockbox does not run on v2. Rockbox would be a very good argument for me to buy the player.
I already browsed through the forums and read statements like "chances are good that the v2 will get a rockbox port" but also that you cannot say when it's finished. I can totally understand that as the volunteers are doing this work in their freetime.
So I browsed the German Amazon.de a bit. I found 2 Sandisk Sansa e280. But there are no pictures that show the whole back of the player.
The first link is: here
It sais that this player is available at Amazon.de since 18th September 2006.
The technical details are: (just a quick translation, so mistakes are possible)

Technical Details
# Producttype: MP3-Player
# Memory Size: 8.192 MB
# Data carrier: Internal Memory
# USB-Port: yes
# Videoplayback: yes
# supports: MP3, WMA, WMA-DRM
# records voice: Ja
# Display: 1,8"-Colordisplay
# MicroSD-Slot up to 2GB: yes
# runs: 20 Stunden
# size: 44 x 89 x 13 mm
This was the first one...
Here is the second player. Amazon tells that it is available since 2. January 2007. It also seems to look a little different. So I guess it is newer. The Technical Details are:

Technical Details
# Producttype: Digital AV-Player
# Functions: Digital Audio-Player, Imageviewer, Video-Player
# Display-Type: colored-TFT
# Display-size: 1.8"
# Display-Aspect ratio: embedded
# Speicher-Type: Flash-card MicroSD
# Integrated Flash-memory: 8 GB
# capacity: ca. 1900 MP3 files
# Playback modes: Autom. Diashow, Digital Audio
# supported audio: WMA, MP3
# Headphone: Mini-Phone Stereo 3.5 mm
# Akku:changeable
# Technology: Lithium-Ionen
# Audio-Playback: 20 hours
# System requirements: OS MS Windows XP
# Included :USB-cable, CD-ROM, carrying bag, Headphones, Li-Ion-Akku
# Size B x H x T: 4.4 x 8.9 x.3.1 cm

My guess is that the first mentioned player is a v1, because the second lists some "digital audio" features. I do not find a suitable translation for "audible support" so I might be wrong.
Though, I am not sure. What do you guess? The first mentioned device is also a very bit cheaper...
Kind Regards and keep up your work with rockbox. It truely makes a rockbox of every player... I installed it on a friends Ipod!

The second link is definitely a v1 e200. If you saw the pictures posted you will see that one of them depicts the Rockbox Main Menu.

For the first one I am not sure. If the item is used you could ask the seller if he knows or when he bought it.

I don't think any of those two is a v1. I had a look a few weeks ago and amazon.de didn't have a sansa e280 in stock (only "this product is sold by ..." market place stuff). So, when they are sold by amazon directly again, it is probably a new charge.

the different images are strange, my v1 doesn't have a sandisk logo on top. But it is always possible that amazon is using generic images they downloaded from the sandisk website.

You can always try ordering one, and if it is a v2 you can send it back free of charge. You can see it without opening the case, the old ones have a white-green-black "lil Monsta" packaging, the v2 has a blue package.

edit: if you buy one I would like to hear if it was a v1 or not.

Mhm... The vendors change quite often the last few days. Even multiple times per day. Right now Amazon is selling both.

Don't worry.If I buy one, I'll tell you what version I got.

I don't think any of those two is a v1.

How can you say that? On the second link I can see a picture that clearly shows the Rockbox Menu, unless the seller lies it is a v1, or someone managed to run Rockbox on v2 models without telling us which I seriously doubt. :P

Edit: Of course I assume that these photos I see are relevant to that specific item and not product photos in general from other devices that various users might have uploaded.

This photo is a photo uploaded by a custumer for this product. There is also a photo that shows the doom menu.
But the photos can be rated. The menu is rated: 10 of 11 users think this picture is useful. For the doom menu it's 5 out of 6.
I think I gonna order the cheaper one... There is nothing said about Rockbox but 10€ difference is quite much for me... If it's no v1 I'll think what I do....

Be weary, though, the photo could always be made in photoshop, etc.

I don't know exactly, but my guess is that amazon uses the old entry and description to sell the v2. Because from the point of view of amazon it really is the same thing. When you see the date the user pictures are added you can see that those are from september 2007 or older., same for the user opinions. It would be nice if I'm wrong, though.

Ah, then I am wrong indeed, I thought that these pictures were bound to the specific item for sale, if not, it is a wild guess if it is a v2 or v1.....

On a side note I did the same thing, I ordered a c240 from eBay without knowing if it is a v1. Fortunately my loss will only be 23 euros if I am wrong, and on the other hand I might just help with the v2 port if I am capable of doing so.

I'll order the cheaper one. If I get a v1... okay. If I get a v2, okay too. Then I might possibly help with the rockbox firmware for it.
Topic can be closed, in my opinion.

you want to tell us what kind you got in the end. So I think it should stay open a little longer  :)

Well, there goes that way to tell.

So far, the only sure way to tell, is to check the firmware version, which, unfortunately, requires opening the package.
