Rockbox Bible
« on: March 26, 2008, 09:21:34 PM »
(I hope this is the right place to put this. If not, then sorry, and feel free to move/remove it.)

Well, I wanted to get a Bible to put on Rockbox. I checked around, and as far as I can tell, no one has made a dedicated app for that yet. So, the next best option is to use a text file, but it would obviously be far to tedious to attempt scrolling through an ENTIRE BIBLE in one text file.

So, I broke it into directories so that under "Bible" you have "Old Testament" and "New Testament," and under those you have a folder for each book, and under those you have individual text files for each of the chapters.

Scrolling through a whole chapter isn't nearly as bad. For reference, it only takes ~ 7 sec to scroll all the way through Psalms 119 (the longest chapter in the Bible).

I don't know if anyone else here would be interested in this or not, but it took a while to get it all set up and formatted to be easily readable, so I thought I'd make the offer anyway.

(BTW, I had to use batching for everything, so there's a chance that stuff got messed up somewhere. If you happen to notice anything, please let me know so I can fix it.)

Edit: Another note I forgot to mention, this is the KJV version, just in case anyone was wondering.

The forums are not the best spot for this static information.

Thanks for it, though, I might try it out later today.

Information, tutorials and resources should be posted to a convenient place in the wiki.  The forums are for discussion.

To get access to the wiki you need to sign up for an account and then ask for write permission as it says on the front page.  The link to the left will take you there.

I can't think of a page that this really fits with, though.  It's not a plugin, and it's not a "useful tool" (although I guess if you're a Christian it might be)...

The Sword project (http://www.crosswire.org/sword/index.jsp) might be an interesting start for a bible plugin. No idea if that code would be easy to port (IIRC we already have a bible feature request in the tracker) but it might be feasible. They also offer various bibles for download.

Also check out http://www.olivetree.com/?setplatform=20
the text files have some tags in them, as they are formatted for the iPod firmware. But when the RB text viewer can support tags it may be worth while to have the ability to view ipod formated files.

Well it's probably my fault, but when I extracted it I got the folders for both Testaments, All the chapter's sub-folders, but there were only one hundred and fifty actual text chapters, 001 being Revalations 1, and I was too confused to go from there.

I tried unzipping it straight to my iPod and it worked. It's a cool plugin.

It's, uh, not a plugin at the moment. It's just a bunch of text files.

(Sorry, just thought, I'd point that out..... :D )
