Best Practice for Bookmarking Audiobooks
« on: March 25, 2008, 09:11:02 AM »
As someone who likes listening to audiobooks (which are usually a series of mp3s), one of the big appeals of Rockbox is that I won't have to join them and/or convert them all to m4b to bookmark them.  However, I've run into a few snags.

First, they will only follow the order of their tags if I play them from the database.

Second, bookmarking doesn't work from the database.

Third, I can't even seem to get bookmarking working when I play from the file menu.  I've been selecting the directory with the audiobook files, saying "insert into playlist" when playback is stopped so that there's nothing else in the playlist, and *still* I can't seem to bookmark.  Nor does auto-bookmarking work when I stop playback.

Can anyone suggest a best way to be able to pick up where I left off?

Thanks!

Hmmm. To answer my own question, it seems to work when I play the first track out of the folder, rather than adding the folder to a playlist.

Why is that?

Bookmarking doesn't work for modified playlists. That is, if you insert a file or a directory, you first need to save the playlist before you can bookmark it. Internally, playing files from the database is very similar to creating a playlist, so bookmarking doesn't work then. If you just play a file in a folder, Rockbox can easily re-create the playlist, so it isn't seen as modified in that case.

When you play from the file browser, Rockbox only considers the file name or date when sorting. This is intentional.

Anyway, there are two solutions to your problem: either name the files so that they appear in the proper order in the file browser (and play from the file browser) or create a playlist and play that. The playlist can be created on the PC if you like (that's what I usually do); save it as an M3U (or M3U8) file.

Also, please edit your post rather than double-post.
