1. Navigate to the root directory via the File browser.
2. Select Playlists from the Main Menu and choose Create Playlist, this will create a playlist in the root directory called root.m3u.
3. Turn Shuffle on. You can do this via the Quick Menu or through the Playback settings.
4. Navigate to the root.m3u file and play it. Rockbox will shuffle all of the files on the player and play them back in random order.

In other words I am not crazy and there is no simple way to just shuffle all the songs. I thought that was the case
Febs:
I think that the method I just described is pretty simple but if it is really too much for you to handle, then use the database, select "all tracks," and then turn on shuffle.
Llorean:
I find long-clicking on my "Music" folder and choosing "Insert Shuffled" is fast and quite simple.

Its not 1 step like on a ipod it something you to read a manual to figure out. Its doesnt seem hard but you need to know what to do
Llorean:
On the iPod you still have to play all tracks, and turn on shuffle. On Rockbox you have to play all tracks, and turn on shuffle.
