Install problem
« on: March 16, 2008, 11:50:42 PM »
Okay, I am not a Linux user and I am new to RockBox... It looked cool so I thought I would try because I want my iPod to be different :). Anyway, I used the Rockbox Utility, set my filesystem device and chose iPod 1st Gen(I know it's 1st Gen). I did the Complete Install and rebooted my iPod, now I get the black screen that gives me this
Quote
Rockbox boot loader
Version: 2.0
IPOD version:

Partition 1: 0x0B 1874MB
Loading Rockbox...
Error!
Can't load rockbox.ipod:
Read failed (chksum)
Hold MENU+SELECT to
reboot then SELECT+PLAY
for disk mode

I have no idea what to do? Can someone help me here?

Thanks...

The first generation iPod was not made in 2GB models. What page did you use to identify your iPod? Are you perhaps confusing "First generation iPod" with "First generation iPod Nano"?

In other words, is your iPod one of these:

Or one of these?

Lol... I gave you all the info but not "Nano". Sorry about that... It's a Nano, and the Rockbox utility, IMO, is awful. This time I just downloaded again, unzipped files to my iPod and used the ipodpatcher to put in the bootloader. Works awesome...

I am wanting to make my own apps for it, like an improved calculator with some functions made by myself. Is this at all possible?

Thanks

The follow up question would ask whether or not you selected Nano in Rockbox Utility.  Information on what you did and how it failed is still useful to the people who code Rockbox Utility.

Of course you can improve things however you like.  Patches should be posted to the patch tracker -- link is on the left side of the page.

Welcome to Rockbox.

Yep, if you can code in C, 'tis possible.

I followed and did everything correctly, pretty darn sure.... F:\ was the drive label and I did enter iPod Nano, then chose Complete Installation. I then tried to boot my iPod and chksum error.

What exactly do I have to do to create programs? I know you say C, but I want to be able to use the app on my iPod... How exactly is it put on the player?

It would be nice if you could elaborate this more detailed -- just calling it "awful" doesn't help us making it better. Also, your initial post looks like you either choose the wrong device or the complete install is broken. This could be the case as it had problems before, so it would be really helpful to have more details about this.

Guys I posted the error it had on the iPod upon boot... It's the checksum...

I don't know how to elaborate on that... It's just the checksum, what more needs be said?

He asked for you to elaborate on the "awfulness" of RBUtility.

The checksum error happened because you picked iPod 1st Generation rather than iPod Nano.
