Remove Rockbox ?!
« on: March 15, 2008, 12:43:28 PM »
Hello

I have had my ipod video 30gig for....eum maybe less then 3 years. The past year, my brother dropped it on the tip of my table, so the screen cracked... (this is a funny part) I went to the place where i bought my ipod and they said that it would cost more then a new one. i was so pissed because it wasn't true, then i got to know someone who was able to fix it for just a couple of euros.

So that guy fixed the screen with no problem and he installed rockbox on it. I like rockbox alot I ahve been using it alot and it has showed itsel very usefull. But now I'd like to sell my ipod for personal reasons and a guy wants to buy it for 150euro, pretty good price. but he needs the original ipod software on it.

I read in some topics that the original software is on the ipod disk that is delivered with the ipod itself.

Therefor my question: Is it possible to put the original ipod softyware back on my ipod?

BTW don't be afraid, i know that i'm a noob and that i really don't know alot about this kinda stuff, but the guy thta fixed my screen wants to put the original software back on my ipod, if he happens to know if it is possible.

thanks

There are uninstallation instructions in the manual.

That's the link to the uninstallation instructions for the iPod Video.

hey

me again
well that's an easy manual. though the guy that fixed it said that it won't work....
I tried to acces my orginial firmware by setting the system on, switching the hold button on emmediately after. and instead of saying 'Loading original firmware ...' it shows tha apple logo (from the start) and then white lines start to emerge... and slowly the whole image goes white untill you can see the logo of apple anymore.... just like when i connect the ipod to my computer with the hold button on.

can someone tell me how this can happenN is it because the original software may be deleted?
i don't really know

thanks again

It is possible to remove the Apple firmware, yes, but it isn't how we recommend installing it.

You need to ask the guy who installed it how he did it.  I would hope he followed the official instructions.

and if he didn't, is there a way to undo it? I mean is the software on the disk of apple and can I just put it on the ipod again?

Yes, you should just be able to restore it with itunes - sorry, I forgot to mention this before.  This will effectively also format your disk.

so even if he for example (I really don't know what happened exactly) deleted all of the original firmware and without rockbox that ipod is just one dead thing....you can still put on the original software 1.0 from the cd?

btw, afterwards it will work normally again? just like it's new

That's correct.  The emergency Disk Mode is stored in flash.  If you connect the iPod to a computer in this mode then iTunes should agree to Restore it.  This is also a way to get the Apple firmware (and proper partition table, formatting, etc.) onto a new replacement drive.

Barring some kind of hardware failure the Restore function in iTunes is supposed to restore the unit to factory condition.  There are other ways to do this also, but iTunes provides the simplest way if you have access to that.

you can do it yourself I am sure :)

First, put the ipod into disk mode. Hold Menu+select, as soon as it starts to reset, hold play and select. This will put the ipod into disk mode. Once it's in disk mode, plug it into the computer and iTunes should recognize it. Use the restore button in iTunes.

As was already posted, this will essentially reformat the drive. So as long as you're not trying to keep the music on the iPod, this should achieve your goal.

And if you're looking to keep all of the music on the iPod, there are uninstallation instructions in our fine manual:

If you can track down a copy of the Apple firmware then you can use ipodpatcher to swap out the Rockbox bootloader for it.

Code: [Select]
ipodpatcher --help
will give you all of the options for ipodpatcher.

btw, I restored it with 1.3 software will be retrying that with the 1.1 software

my computer doesn't even show the device when i plug it it, it only sees that I put a use a usb port
