Cannot downgrade sansa c240 for some reason
« on: March 13, 2008, 11:20:44 PM »
I have the v version on my c240 sansa so rockbox does not work on it.
so i tried downgrading by downloading the older firmware, unzipping the files and copying to the player. but it does not downgrade.
I think the problem might be that i dotn have it in recovery mode
but when i try to put it in recovery mode ( turn off, switch to hold, hold rec button and plug in player) it acts as if i plugged it in the usual way and nothing is different.
i tried copying files to the player in this mode anyway but that didnt work.
then i tried putting it into MSC mode (turn off, switch to hold, hold << button and plug in) but when i unplug after copying files, it still does not load the old firmware.
Is there a specific file that i am supposed to copy the files to? i tried (in both modes) to add it to the music folder but that doesnt work and Im not sure what the root folder is, which is where all the instructions say the files should be copied to.
I'm really frustrated right now because i got my sansa last year late september and tried to get rockbox on but after several unsuccessful days of trying, gave up. THen i was really happy when i found out today that downgrading worked for many ppl but now im even more frustrated than i was in september.
Is anyone having the same problem, or have any suggestions as to what i might be doing incorrectly?

Downgrading the firmware allows people who own v1 versions to put their player's into MSC USB mode, it does not allow you to turn a v2 model into a v1 because they're actually made of different parts, it's not just the firmware that's different.

Rockbox doesn't work at all on the v2 models.  Dommage.

Am I understanding correctly?

For the record, the root directory is the top directory.  So if your Sansa is being shown as the J drive, the root of your player is J:\

The V2 and V1 Sansas have completely different hardware.  You cannot change a V2 into a V1 by doing anything to the firmware.  To get Rockbox on a V2 someone needs to step up and do a new port, the existing code will not run at all.

alinasept: what's the firmware version on your c240? Is it a refurbished unit?

I got a refurbished c250 a couple of weeks ago, that has the v2 on the back, but it turns out it is really a v1.

From the anythingbutipod forums:

Quote
The easiest way to tell if you have a v1 or v2 is by the firmware version. If you have a c200v2, the firmware version will be 3.XX.XX. If you have firmware version 1.XX.XX, you have a c200v1.

To get your firmware version by:

1. Go into the Main Menu
2. Select Setting on the Main Menu
3. Scroll and select Info

I don't have my c250 with me right now, but mine turned out to be a v1 labeled as v2.

Since you have been unable to run rockbox, most likely  you have a real v2 version. Just check the firmware version to confirm.

No. The v1 and v2 have totally different hardware inside
