Donation: Non-working iaudio X5
« on: March 13, 2008, 03:25:08 AM »
Hi all,

I have a 20 GB iaudio X5L. Everything on it is fine, except:
-it has a ridiculous amount of distortion when playing music (like tuning into a faraway AM radio station)
-chipped paint and dings (one small but deep scratch is on the glass screen cover thingy)
-The AC adapter is broken (I will include a third-party AC adapter which works with the X5).

BTW, I changed the hard drive at one point  since I dropped my X5 and got a broken HDD error. It now has the same Toshiba model HDD and has no HDD errors.

So this includes:
-X5
-subpack
-iaudio earphones
-third-party ac adapter
-usb-OTG dongle (if I can find it; I probably will)

I do not wish to pay shipping (I live in Maryland, USA near Washington DC). If you wish for me to ship to you, send shipping+handling by paypal or something. If there are customs, then pay that to me as well. I might be persuaded to pay shipping and handling myself (for what reason? I am not sure).

I currently am using a rockbox'd gigabeat F, so I give preference to these types of people (in this order):
-LinusN
-Devs with X5 and gigabeat
-Devs with gigabeat
-Other Devs

I'm not quite sure why you would prefer to give an X5 to a dev that already has one?  I can of course see why a dev would be preferable, and on their behalf thank you for the offer, but

a)  Most of rockbox applies to all the software codec players
b)  Devs that already have an X5, um, already have one :)

As I said, I have a gigabeat. It would make little sense for a gigabeat owner to cause a dev to become enamored with another player.  :P

That being said, I will likely give it to LinusN. I just need to get a shipping and customs quote this weekend to send it from Maryland, USA (around Washington DC) to Sweden. Anybody know the best option?

So basically, you want to send it to someone so long as they're not likely to use it? This makes very little sense toward forwarding the project...

I didn't say they weren't likely to use it. Just that it wouldn't cause a major shift in priorities.

But if they already have one, they aren't likely to use it.  Also, as I said earlier:

Seriously, whilst I applaud donating hardware, it is not very useful to only donate to a dev that already has the same hardware, and saying that donating to a dev without will shift their priorities just isn't the way rockbox works.  Unless it is low level hardware drivers, work done on Rockbox applies to many players, not a specific one.

And since the x5 port is quite mature now - pretty much all the low level hardware stuff is done now - so there's not going to be much more work happening there these days.

If he wanted to, though, he could offer it to someone (even a dev) for parts or repair. Someone with a broken X5 could use parts from this one to get a fully working X5 out of it.

But like everyone has said, afruff23, the X5 port is very mature now, and aside from USB-OTG, there's really not much to do with it.

I'm sure Linus will make good use of it. I wanted to specifically give it to a Rockbox dev seeing as how I wanted to make a donation to the project.

Then in that case, you have to ask him yourself if it's okay to send him the X5.

I completely understand wanting to give it to a dev, I just didn't understand your criteria for why only certain devs.

He sent me an e-mail and said he has use for it.

I didn't have a criteria for certain devs. I had a PRIORITY though. LinusN was my number one priority because he was especially involved in the early developing of the X5 port (my first player) and he currently owns a Gigabeat (my current player).

Everybody makes priorities. Such is the nature of "human action" (e.g. the book by Ludwig von Mises).

Criteria/priorities - the distinction here is not important.  If you prefer, I don't understand your priorities (of course we all have priorities...)

Anyway, I'm glad it found a good home  :).
