Theme Help
« on: March 12, 2008, 05:23:01 PM »
Hi guys, it's my first time using rockbox. I have installed everything i needed. Now for the themes is what i need help on. Ok, so when you download the theme where do you save it to and what's this .wps? I want it so that when i download the theme and then go to my ipod and click browse themes i am able to find the theme i downloaded. So just tell where to save it to, if i need to extract it, and this .wps thing.
-Thanks

Extract the zip to the root of your DAP.  If the theme author has made the theme properly you will then be able to select it from browse themes.

All I said was to extract it to the root of your DAP.  That applies to any OS.  I made no mention of how to do it.  You can get sensible GUI unzip tools for the Mac that work properly - just not the default one.

DAP = digital audio player

In colloquial speak, that would be your MP3 player.

And how exactly do you extract it to the root of my mp3? And what do you mean by the root?
-Sorry for all these questions, I'm new to Rockbox

First of all, save the theme to where you want it to. It's currently what's called a .zip file - a bunch of files put into one file and made smaller. For the following example, I will assume you use Windows. Save the .zip file anywhere you want - for example, the Desktop. Open your MP3 player by going to My Computer and double-clicking on whatever drive is your MP3 player. You are now in what's called the root - the base of the drive's folder structure. Leaving the window open, drag the .zip file to your MP3 player with the right mouse button. When you release, a menu will appear. Click on "Extract Here". If you are warned about the possibility of overwriting files, tell it to keep going.

Voila! :) The theme is installed.

That reminds me! :-[ I forgot to mention....
The answer to your question is the first option - kind of. Do the following to finish things up:

I assume you've at least done everything I said so far. There should now be a folder on your MP3 player with the same name as the .zip file. Go into that folder. You should see a folder called .rockbox. Right-click on it and choose Cut. Hit the Back button near the top of the window, right-click on an empty white space, and choose Paste.

Windows should warn you that there is a folder "conflict", and asks if you "still want to move or copy the folder". Say Yes to All. No files will actually be overwritten or deleted. The theme should now be properly installed. :)

I know you moderators are in a hurry (or are constantly giving the same answers), but sometimes it's more helpful to just spell things out. ;)

Yes, resources for Rockbox should be packaged so that the archive only needs to be extracted to the root of the player.
