[Ipod 5.5G] "rockbox.ipod" missing (solved)

Hi !

I have an ipod video 30G (5.5G) and I can't install rockbox on it. It always say that "rockbox.ipod" is missing when I try to boot after the installation.

Indeed, in my ipod directory there's no file named "rockbox.ipod". So I checked if I didn't forgot to paste it during installation but I saw there's no file "rockbox.ipod" in all the rockbox packages I tried... (and I had the same problem with this installer)

I saw there was a "rockbox.ipod" in the .rockbox directory, so I tried to copy it into the root directory but still nothing (at the boot of my ipod I still get the same error...)

What can I do to solve this problem ?

ps : I use linux and my ipod is formatted in fat32.

rockbox.ipod should be inside the .rockbox folder, as it is in the rockbox.zip that you download.  If you extract rockbox.zip directly to the player root, the correct directory structure will be created.  The .rockbox folder should NOT be inside any other folder on your ipod.

One way to do this on linux is from the directory you have downloaded rockbox.zip to, type "unzip rockbox.zip -d /media/ipod" replacing /media/ipod with the correct mount point for your ipod.

That's what I did... so why rockbox doesn't see it at boot ?

What bootloader are you using and how did you install it?

I tried http://build.rockbox.org/dist/build-ipodvideo/rockbox.zip (current build), rockbox-ipodvideo-20080312.zip and the installer rbutilqt-v1.0.4. I followed this manual and for the bootloader I used ipodpatcher like they said in manual.

Well, that is indeed perfect (thank you for reading the manual , so I don't understand why it isn't working.

Have you repartitioned the iPod at all in the past, or otherwise changed the layout of the partition table?  Does the Apple firmware still boot? (switch hold on when the apple logo appear to dual boot [I think ])

Yes I did. I tried ipodlinux before rockbox and repartitionned my ipod at this time. But I came back to the origine configuration with the command "dd" and the save files I did before trying ipodlinux...

Yes the apple firmware boot correctly.

Hmmm, I can only think it might be that causing it (although why I don't know if you just dd'd a backup straight back on).  If you have access to a Windows PC with itunes you can try restoring it.  You might want to pop on IRC (#rockbox on freenode) and ask there - I don't own an iPod so you will probably fine people there in a better position to help further.

Cool !! I restored my ipod and it works !

I think the problems was in my ipod directories and the permissions... (probably cames from my test for ipodlinux from yesturday...)
