Godawful sound after second or third song (was: Rockbox help)
« on: March 12, 2008, 09:28:07 AM »
I'm not sure if this is in the right forum or not but I just downloaded Rockbox for the first time it installed fine and everything but when I play songs after the second or third song it plays some god awful sound and when I try to skip the song the next song shows the file name that is on the iPod (the four letter thing). I tried to search the forum for this same problem but I couldn't find it. Thanks.

Welcome to Rockbox!

Does this happen on all songs, or only on particular tracks?

(By the way, it's always appropriate to post a question in the General Discussion forum if you're unsure where it belongs, so that was fine, though I'm going to move the thread to the Audio Playback forum.  Also, I've renamed your thread with a descriptive title, as required by our posting guidelines.)

it plays some god awful sound

Check your WPS, if it says that the artist is Leona Lewis then that might be the root of the problem ;)

Sorry, couldn't resist.

Please could you let us know a bit more info:

a) The Rockbox revision you're using - visible in System > Rockbox Info.  This is a number prefixed with r; for example, the latest revision at time of writing is r16639.  (If you're running an old version somehow, please try the latest and see if it fixes it.)

b) What format is your music in?  MP3/OGG/AAC? - bitrate?  Are all tracks the same format, or do you have a mixture of types?

c) Are you using Album Art?  Are you using EQ?  Are you using crossfade?  It might help pin down the source of the problem if you can turn features off one at a time.  There's a known issue reported with crossfade here: http://www.rockbox.org/tracker/task/8651

d) Which sort of iPod do you have?

Also have you made sure that these files aren't corrupt and playback properly on your computer?

Did you find a way to avoid the noise problem? (other than not using crossfade!)

This problem is believed to be solved, please report if it still happens (with crossfade on) with a current build.
hhannah appears to be happy with the fix  ;D

I can confirm that since I've loaded Version: r16908-080401, I have no more crossfade problems

I am running into a potentially similar issue.  Some songs will stop for a period, sometimes they restart after several seconds but many/most times a sound similar to a jackhammer will start, the clickwheel (iPod 5.5G 80G) will typically be unresponsive at this time, sometimes a reset is required to stop the noise.

I am running primarily FLAC files that have been part of my various systems for a few years, no issue with playback in any of my home based systems (SB3 and PC with Foobar).

It doesn't repeat the "jackhammering" and the songs don't stop while playing the same song again after reset.

Rockbox version # r17055-080409

I have approximately 1638 songs in my database all under one directory.  I have used the database and had the same thing happen.  I then went into the .rockbox folder and deleted all of the .tcm files per another thread that seemed to be having similar issues.  Now I am playing files from the Files folder and the same thing is happening again.

Also, I don't have equalizer enabled and I am not doing anything with crossfade.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Ed

Please update to the current build and try again.  The problem may or may not have been solved in an up-to-date build, but there is no point wasting energy in trying to troubleshoot if it has.

@ebag4: The crossfade fix was committed in r16890, and the one you are using is newer, so it shouldn't be the same problem. The noise problem described on this thread is apparently quite different from the one you mention. The crossfade noise was as described in http://www.rockbox.org/tracker/task/8651 , there you will also find a couple recordings that will let you identify if the problem is the same or not. If it is a different problem, and as BigBambi says, it persists in the newest versions, it would be probably a good idea to treat it independently.

Just as a followup, I updated to the current build as recommended by BigBambi (thanks) and this appears to have improved playback quite a bit.  Through 10 tracks of the 1638 track playlist I have experienced 3 dropouts which have all picked back up within 2 seconds, much better than the previous build.  So far the jackhammer noise has not reappeared.

Thanks guys,
Ed

Cool, I'm glad that helped.  Various playback related issues are being investigated at the moment, so hopefully further improvements are to come.
