iPod name trashed by Rockbox
« on: March 12, 2008, 01:28:59 AM »
Okay, so here's the deal. Rockbox has set my iPod's name to ROCKBO~1 (in apple firmware, go to Settings | About).

I changed the name back from within iTunes, and the correct name appears in Windows (drive name) and in iTunes. However the iPod itself is still reporting the wrong name.

Now this had nothing to do with the Rockbox installer, because I installed it manually along with iPodLinux.

All I did was add rockbox to my ipodloader.conf file, and copy the .rockbox directory to the root of my fat32 drive.

So basically, my question is, how can I correct this. I've tried looking through the config files in the iPod_Control, and I even opened the fat32 header in a hexeditor (to see if perhaps ROCKBO~1 was the volume name, it wasn't).

Suggestions?

Installing Rockbox doesn't change anything that would do this, and nobody else has ever reported this sort of problem. Are you sure it's not something iPodLinux could've caused? Just because the string that ended up getting used is from Rockbox doesn't mean Rockbox set it, just that something noticed a file with the shortname"ROCKBO~1" on your FAT32 partition and somehow set that value.

Okay, thanks for the info. I will look into the possibility of it being caused by iPodLinux.

Btw, does anyone happen to know where the iPod actually reads its name from? That would really help me out.

Don't you set the iPod's name somewhere in iTunes?

As to where it actually *stores* the info, no idea.

Okay I've solved it. In case anyone else ever has this problem, here's the deal:

If you delete all iPod directory structure (iPod_Control, etc) then when you boot into Apple OS, the iPod not only recreates them all, but also apparently searches through files on the disk for a name.

I *suspect* that this name is stored in the "master playlist" entry in iTunesDB, but I wasn't able to prove this.

Anyway, to fix it, move all your .rockbox and any other files you want to keep off your iPod. Delete *everything* on the fat32. Reboot into Apple OS, your name is now fine. Now put back the .rockbox and everything, and you're good to go.
